Gorilla trekking is a top safari attraction for many tourists who visit Uganda from South Africa every year just to meet the gentle giant mountain gorillas in their natural habitat of Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks. When you decide to gorilla trek Uganda gorillas from South Africa, we at Encounter Africa Safaris will help you plan your safari by booking and purchasing the gorilla permit on your behalf and plan for other logistics like transport and accommodation to ensure that you have the best gorilla trek safari in Uganda.
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park, both of which are located in the southwestern part of Uganda. Bwindi is divided into four sectors, Nkuringo, Buhoma, Ruhija and Rushaga and gorilla trekking is carried out in these four sectors. Mgahinga is small in nature and has only one habituated gorilla family.
Tourists travelling from South Africa can also engage in gorilla habituation experience which is offered only in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the Rushaga sector. The habituation experience gives tourists 4 hours with the gorillas unlike the one hour spent during the standard gorilla trekking.
When planning a gorilla safari to Uganda, you need to make sure that you are specific with the exact trekking destination you would prefer so that the booking and planning are done earlier on.
Other activities that tourists can carry out after gorilla trekking in Mgahinga and Bwindi include taking on the Batwa trail, bird watching, golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga, primate walks, wildlife viewing and cultural trips and guided nature walks, among others.
Purchase of the gorilla permits can be done through Encounter Africa Safaris, a tour company that has years of experience in organizing gorilla safaris to Uganda and Rwanda. You need to know the cost of the gorilla permit before you start planning, and as of 2024, the cost is $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, $500 for other Africans with passports and UGX 300 000 for East African Citizens.
Booking gorilla permits in Uganda has easy steps that you have to follow when booking the permits and you need to first get your desired dates for trekking and get in touch with a tour operator. Contact a tour operator after carrying out extensive research about them with your dates so that they can be able to check for the availability of the permits. Checking for the availability of permits in Uganda can only be done by registered tour operators who access the booking system under the maintenance and management of UWA.
Checking for the availability of the permits ensures that tourists do not book permits on the same day. When the dates are available, the tour operators will proceed with temporarily booking for the permit and then you are requested to make the payments for the permits.
The payments for the permits have to be done as soon as you get to know that the permits are available and send in enough payments covering bank charges as well. When we confirm that the payments are in our accounts, the permits are then bought, and a copy is sent via email.
Note that gorilla permits are bought on a first-come, first-serve basis, and this is why you need to book and pay for the permits at least 6 months before the trek date.
