Mucunguzi gorilla family is yet another mountain gorilla group located in Rushaga region of Bwindi impenetrable National Park. Mucunguzi means “Savior” was the third and youngest silverback of Bweza gorilla group in Rushaga region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. After leaving Bweza gorilla group, it formed and led the now Mucunguzi gorilla group in Rushaga. Rushaga is in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and has the highest number of habituated gorilla families in Bwindi impenetrable National Park. Origin of Mucunguzi gorilla family.

Information coming from rushaga gorilla trail head indicate that Mucunguzi gorilla family or Mucunguzi gorilla group was formed by a solitary silverback called Mucunguzi from which the name Mucunguzi gorilla family was derived. Information has it that after a serious in fight in one of the habituated mountain gorilla family called, Bweza where Mucunguzi was the third in command or the young silverback in the group. Mucunguzi was chased out of this Bweza gorilla group and started living a lonely life. With time, Mucunguzi attacked Bikingi gorilla family fighting the dominant silverback and taking away some of the members mainly female to form a new gorilla family which was then named Mucunguzi gorilla family. At the moment, Mucunguzi gorilla group is composed of 8 members dominantly female and can be trekked from Rushaga UWA headquarters in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
