ABOUT GORILLA HABITUATION EXPERIENCE

A Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique conservation and tourism activity where a small group of four visitors go together with a team of researchers, conservationists, and ranger guides to spend extended time with wild mountain gorillas in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable National Park.

The goal of habituation is to slowly train wild mountain gorillas to become comfortable and accustomed to human presence without altering their natural behaviors. This two-to-three-year process allows researchers to monitor the troop, and it allows select travelers to witness a much more raw, authentic side of gorilla life.

Gorilla habituation experience is exclusively done in Uganda specifically in Rushaga side of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Only four gorilla habituation permits are available daily and tend to sell our quickly.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE EXPERIENCE

  1. Early Departure: The gorilla habituation experience excursion starts early in the morning at the park headquarters for a briefing on safety and rules on how to behave while with gorillas in the forest. Because these mountain gorillas are not fully habituated, tracking them can take longer than a standard trek. A certain level of physical fitness is required
  2. Following the Trails: During your gorilla habituation expedition, you will hike through the dense forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park following the previous night's nesting trails alongside researchers who track the troop's movements.
  3. The 4-Hour Encounter: Once the semi-habituated family is found you will be allowed to spend up to four immersive hours with them. Because these gorillas are still getting used to humans, they may act more naturally—exhibiting shyness, intense curiosity, or playful interactions among the infants—while researchers use soft vocalizations and submissive postures to reassure them.
  4. Active Learning: Rather than just passively watching, you will actively participate in the experience, get to observe firsthand how researchers identify individual gorillas, track their behaviors, study their diet, and name new family members. This is unique to those who book gorilla habituation experience safaris.
