Serengeti National Park covers about 14750 kilometres square and is larger as compared to Masai Mara Nature Reserve. Due to the large size of the national park, flights are the best to get around. The best time to go for a wildlife safari in Serengeti is generally the dry season which is also similar to Masai Mara from June to October and December to February.
Masai Mara Nature Reserve is best known because of the annual great wildebeest migration and is located in Kenya along the border of Kenya and Tanzania. The nature reserve is best visited during the dry season from June to October although it can be visited all year round.
Both Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara Nature Reserve are home to the annual wildebeest migration in Africa and it takes the ancient routes that have been used by the wildebeests through the ages. During the wildebeest migration, over 2 million wildebeests, gazelles and zebras migrate from Serengeti National Park to Masai Mara National Reserve and then back and this is a continued cycle. There is no specific reason as to why the animals migrate but it is believed that they migrate due to weather changes and search for pasture. There are two river crossings during the migration the first one is at the Grumeti River and the second crossing is at the Mara River.
The larger part of the wildebeest migration is experienced in Serengeti where the calving starts from in the Ngorongoro crater which is close to Serengeti. If you are going to spend more time watching the wildebeest migration, Tanzania is the best destination because other factors remain constant, Masai Mara wildebeest migration takes only two months.
The best time for spotting the wildebeest migration in Serengeti is from November to July. The peak for the migration in northern Serengeti is between late May and June and this is the best time to see the herds crossing the Serengeti plains. June is the best time to see the Mara crossings from Serengeti into Masai Mara. January and February is when most of the herds move to southern Serengeti to give birth and this is an optimal time to watch the wildebeest migration.
August to September is the best time to watch the wildebeest migration in Masai Mara which is located in Kenya. Sometimes the wildebeest herds arrive as early as July but they can still arrive late depending on the rains. The Mara River crossings in Masai Mara are best watched in September. The crossing is one of the most thrilling experiences as you watch the herds cross the crocodile infested river some are successful whereas others are not.
The Big Five is a top safari attraction on the African continent and the animals include among the Big Five include lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalos and elephants.
Serengeti National Park is a better destination for spotting all the big five and this is because leopards are highly concentrated in Serengeti compared to Masai Mara. The Seronera Valley also known as central Serengeti is the best place to spot the leopards and you can join the safari to Serengeti with Ngorongoro where you have the chance of spotting all the big five.
Masai Mara rhinos are scarce and hard to see although they can be spotted in both Serengeti and Masai Mara. However, Serengeti beats Masai Mara hands down when it comes to spotting the big five.
One of the most frequently asked questions that are asked about Serengeti and Masai Mara is which of the two the best for wildlife viewing throughout the year. In terms of wildlife density, Masai Mara is better than Serengeti. Masai Mara has a high wildlife concentration throughout the year and it is much easier to spot the wildlife over a shorter period since they are concentrated in the same area. It has a big cat sighting with lots of cheetahs and a pride of lions.
Serengeti on the other hand is a large park and the animals are spread out far and wide making it hard for tourists to get to see all the wildlife in the national park over a short period. There are a variety of wildlife in the national park including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and many more. The advantage that Masai Mara has over Masai Mara is that it is close to Ngorongoro crater which is home to a high concentration of animal species and it was named a UNESCO Heritage site.
Tourists visiting both Masai Mara and Serengeti National Park should know that the best time to go for wildlife viewing is from June to October and this is because this is the dry season which is the best time to go for game drives although you can view the wildlife all year round, especially in Masai mara.
The Masai Mara and Serengeti National Park have a similar ecosystem although there are distinct landscapes that are unique to each. Masai Mara is hillier as compared to Serengeti which has a diverse landscape covering a large area. Serengeti means endless plains and Mara means spotted referring to the shadows cast by the trees.
The southern part of Serengeti National Park is filled with grasslands and as you head to central Serengeti, it becomes more hilly and grassy. When you head to the west leading to Masai Mara, the landscape becomes hilly and the acacia trees are more present in the area. The eastern part of Serengeti heading to Ngorongoro is filled with montane areas, woodlands, grasslands and highlands.
Central Masai Mara has sweeping plains and is surrounded by dense river forests. The surrounding ecosystem is filled with rocky outcrops and acacia woodlands.
Masai Mara safaris were previously low as compared to Serengeti National Park but as of 2024, the Mara costs have greatly increased and the gap between the cost of Serengeti and Masai Mara is significantly close at the moment. You can still however have a budget-friendly safari to Masai Mara depending on the accommodation chosen.
Serengeti National Park is much more expensive as compared to Masai Mara and the main reason is because of the large size of the national park and there are few budget-friendly accommodation facilities so taking or having a budget-friendly Serengeti safari is not an option.
Several factors affect the cost of the safari in Serengeti and Masai Mara and these include accommodation, transport, season of travel, group size you are travelling with, the number of days spent on the safari and many more others.
When we talk about accommodation in Masai Mara, there are large concentrations within the national park especially in the eastern part of the reserve and it tends to get crowded, especially during the dry season, so if you want to avoid the large crowds, avoid the months of June to October. The accommodation is cheaper in Masai Mara because there are so many and the competition among them is high hence reducing the cost of the safari.
Travelling in large groups greatly reduces the cost of the safari in both because the costs are shared among the different costs among yourselves, travelling in the low season also reduces the cost of the safari, and the more days you spend on your safari, the more you are likely to spend.
Accommodation in both Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara have accommodation that is categorized into three and these include budget/basic, mid-range and luxury accommodation facilities. These can be found either within the national parks whereas others are located outside.

Masai Mara has better, more affordable accommodation in terms of lodges and camps than Serengeti National Park. Many of these lodges and camps are located within the national park however there are more budget-friendly accommodation facilities outside Masai Mara National Reserve and others are located in the nearby private conservancies.
Serengeti National Park on the other hand has few accommodation facilities spread out and the cost of each is high because of the high demand, especially during the dry season. There are also mid-range lodges and camps that you can use and enjoy your safari in Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara.
Camping in private reserves in Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara is a bonus because they are more affordable as compared to camps in Masai Mara and they are less crowded. You also get to reduce the park fees when you use private conservancies.
