Attractions in Semuliki National Park.

June 2, 2026

Attractions in Semuliki National Park.

Most visitors to Uganda come for the gorillas. A smaller and considerably more fortunate number find their way to Semuliki National Park and discover a wilderness so ancient, so ecologically extraordinary, and so completely unlike anything else in East Africa that the experience of being there feels, in the most literal sense, like stepping into another world. To understand what makes Semuliki National Park so significant, one must first appreciate what it actually is. Semuliki National Park lies on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is an extension of the exceptionally biodiverse Ituri Forest the only true lowland tropical forest in East Africa, home to over 441 bird species and 53 mammal species, including over ten species of primate.

This is the only park in Uganda to be composed mainly of tropical lowland forest. The forest is very dense and quite flat, creating a startling contrast to the rugged Rwenzori Mountains nearby. It is a landscape that feels genuinely ancient as though the processes of geological and biological evolution that shaped the rest of the continent have been playing out here, undisturbed and at their own pace, for longer than human memory can reach.

Semuliki National Park is located in the western part of Uganda and covers an area of 220 square kilometers at an elevation of 670 to 760 metres above sea level. The park was established in 1993 and is protected by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Despite its relatively modest size, the density and diversity of life it contains place it among the most ecologically significant protected areas in the entire East African region a fact that the park's relatively low visitor numbers make all the more remarkable.

Sempaya Hot Springs.

Sempaya Hot Springs are Semuliki's most famous attraction. The male spring, known as Bintente, measures 12 metres in diameter and is set in a lush swampy clearing. The female spring, Nyasimbi meaning the female ancestors is a boiling geyser at 103 degrees Celsius, which spurts bubbling water and steam up to two metres high. The steam cloud can be seen from as far as two kilometers away. Local people used to cook their food in these boiling pools.

These geothermal wonders attract visitors from around the world. The two main hot springs the Male and Female springs, are culturally significant to the local Bamaga people. The hot springs also serve as a natural habitat for unique microorganisms and add to the park's considerable allure.

Bird Species.

For the serious birdwatcher, Semuliki National Park is not merely a rewarding safari destination it is a destination of world significance. In the East African region, Semuliki is the only area where visitors can spot Congo Guinea forest biome bird species such as the pimping hornbill, Congo serpent eagle, spot-breasted ibis, and red-thighed sparrowhawk.

The park is home to 441 bird species including the white-crested hornbill, shoebill stork, piping hornbill, red-billed dwarf hornbill, yellow-throated nicator, African Piculet, Ross's turaco, yellow-throated cuckoo, orange weaver, and swamp palm bulbul.

The park's diverse habitats provide opportunities to spot rare and endemic species. Popular birding spots include the Kirumia Trail, the Sempaya Hot Springs area, and the Ntandi area. The Kirumia Trail which runs through one of the finest sections of lowland forest in the park is particularly productive for the Central African specialty species that draw dedicated birders from across the world to Semuliki specifically and exclusively.

Primate Species.

Semuliki National Park is a home to eight species of primate. This concentration of primate diversity in a single relatively compact forest ecosystem is extraordinary a direct consequence of Semuliki's position as the westernmost extension of the Central African forest biome into East Africa, bringing with its species whose ranges elsewhere extend deep into the Congo Basin.

While on a Uganda birding safari in Semuliki National Park, visitors can enjoy sightings of primate species like black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and Central African red colobus, among others. The opportunity to observe these primates moving through the dense lowland forest swinging through the canopy, foraging in the understory, and calling to one another across the ancient trees is one of the most purely pleasurable wildlife experiences Semuliki has to offer.

Kirumia Nature Trail.

This section of trail runs through one of the loveliest tracts of forest in Uganda and provides views of birds and monkeys high up in the forest canopy. There are interesting nature trails to explore at Semuliki National Park, including the Red Monkey Trail an 11-kilometre nature walking trail that introduces visitors to the scenic Semuliki River. Wilderness Travel

Kirumia Trail is the finest and most immersive walking experience available in the park a route that takes the visitor deep into the heart of the ancient lowland forest, away from the roads and vehicle tracks, and into a landscape of extraordinary ecological complexity and beauty. The trail is conducted with a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger and an experienced local guide, and the pace is unhurried and exploratory stopping frequently to observe, identify, and understand the extraordinary diversity of life that surrounds the path at every point.

Mammals of the Lowland Forest.

Some of the African species to be spotted include leopards, Uganda kobs, warthogs, waterbuck, buffalo, and forest elephants. Elephant, buffalo, leopard, civet, bushbaby, and flying squirrels are also found within the park. The wildlife of Semuliki is in many respects as distinctive as its birdlife. The forest elephant population, for example, represents a species that exists at the very edge of its East African range here, and encounters with these smaller, more forest-adapted cousins of the savannah elephants found elsewhere in Uganda carry a particular quality of rarity and significance.

While Semuliki National Park is not as famous for big game as some of Uganda's other parks, it still offers unique wildlife experiences. The key to appreciating Semuliki's wildlife is the understanding that the park's value lies not in the volume or predictability of its game viewing but in the rarity and distinctiveness of the species it harbors, many of which exist at the absolute eastern limit of their Central African ranges and are found nowhere else in Uganda or East Africa.

Semuliki River and Lake Albert.

Lamia and Semuliki rivers run along the park's perimeter, and Lake Albert borders the park to the north. Semuliki River from which the park takes its name is not merely a geographical feature but an ecological one, providing a permanent water source that sustains the park's extraordinary wildlife and birdlife and creates a riverine habitat of distinctive beauty and productivity.

Boat rides along the Semuliki River provide a perspective on the park's wildlife and birdlife that is impossible to achieve from the land drifting silently along a waterway flanked by ancient forest, with birds erupting from the riverside vegetation and hippos surfacing and submerging in the shallows ahead. For the visitor who has experienced boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park or on the Nile at Murchison Falls, the Semuliki River experience offers a smaller-size, more intimate, and in many respects more atmospheric alternative.

Toro-Semuliki Wildlife Reserve.

Adjacent to the national park lies the Toro-Semuliki Wildlife Reserve a complementary protected area of savannah grassland and riverine forest that provides game drives of a more conventional East African character, with Uganda kob, buffalo, oribi, and the occasional elephant visible on the open plains.

Three tracks cross the savannah grassland of the Toro-Semuliki Wildlife Reserve offering a safari experience that contrasts pleasingly with the forest walks and hot spring visits of the national park itself, and providing a more familiar and accessible introduction to the wildlife of the region for visitors who may find the dense lowland forest environment somewhat challenging.

Everything went smoothly: Transfers, accommodation, meals and activities were excellently coordinated. The highlight was of course the encounters with the gorillas in Bwindi National Park and the chimpanzees in Kibale Forest – an unforgettable experience we will never forget. Our guide deserves special praise. He was not only extremely competent and experienced, but also incredibly friendly, helpful and flexible. Thanks to his warm nature we felt safe and well looked after throughout the trip. He told us a lot about nature, wildlife and life in Uganda and made the trip very special. We can fully recommend this tour – it was a perfectly organized, varied and unforgettable trip through a beautiful country with warm people.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
