Key Information

  • Gorilla Permits: Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost $1,500 USD per person for international non-residents and must be booked well in advance, especially for the peak season, because they easily sell out.
  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit  Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons (June to September and December to February), when the trails are less muddy, and hiking is generally easier, but the activity is done at any time of the year.
  • Activities at Lake Kivu: Common activities include boat trips, swimming, kayaking, visiting hot springs, and exploring local fishing villages.
  • Transportation: Tours are conducted in a 4x4 Safari vehicle with a professional driver. All transfers from and to Kigali are included.
  • Accommodation: A range of options is available, from budget and mid-range to luxury Accommodations.
  • Logistics: Tour packages generally include private 4x4 transport, an English-speaking guide, accommodation, meals, and the gorilla permit fee, but flights, visa fees, and tips are typically excluded. Tour operators can handle the logistics and permit booking for a seamless experience.

What to pack for your gorilla and Lake Kivu safari

  • Sturdy hiking boots: These should be comfortable enough to provide good ankle support.
  • Waterproof gear: A waterproof jacket or poncho is essential, since these are rainforest areas.
  • Long-sleeved shirt and trousers: These protect you from stinging nettles, scratches, and insects.
  • Gardening gloves: These help protect your hands from being pierced by thorny plants.
  • Camera gear: Consider a camera with a good zoom lens and bring some extra batteries, as they might drain quickly in cold and humid conditions.
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen: This is crucial for protection in the forest and during the drives.
  • Energy snacks: Bring high-energy snacks like nuts or energy bars.
  • Gaiters and long socks: To help prevent dirt and insects from getting into your boots
  • Waterproof daypack to carry your belongings like a camera, phones, and water bottles
  • Wide hats and sunglasses. These are to protect you from the direct sunlight during your trekking experience.
