WHY UGANDA WILDLIFE AUTHORITY INCREASED GORILLA HABITUATION PERMIT PRICE FROM $1500 TO $1800

June 30, 2026

WHY UGANDA WILDLIFE AUTHORITY INCREASED GORILLA HABITUATION PERMIT PRICE FROM $1500 TO $1800

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) implemented these regular tariff adjustments resulting in increasing the price of gorilla habituation permits from $1500 to $1,800 USD for foreign nonresidents (effective January 1, 2027)—mainly to fund thorough conservation and address community needs.

Gorilla habituation remains the most expensive primate experience in the whole world but value for money. While most primate experiences including standard gorilla treks in Uganda and Rwanda offer you only one hour with mountain gorillas, gorilla habituation experience allows you to spend four hours with semi-habituated mountain gorillas.

Gorilla habituation takes place in the southern part of Bwindi in Rushaga and Nkuringo and below are the reasons why Uganda has decided to increase the price of gorilla habituation experience permits from $1500 to $1800 starting 1st January 2027.

  1. The High Cost involved in the Habituation Process

To habituate a group of wild mountain gorillas, a lot of costs are involved since it is resource intensive operation that involves researchers, veterinary, rangers, guides that requires funding to ensure that these mountain gorillas eventually and gradually get used to human presence.

Please note that the exercise of habituated mountain gorillas may take 2-3 years of daily visits, monitoring and supervising these wild gorillas to determine the progress. This whole process if so expensive and thus required Uganda Wildlife Authority to increase the price of gorilla habituation permits from$1500 to $1800 to cater for such costs.

  1. Solidification of Conservation & Anti-Poaching Funding

The increase of gorilla habituation experience permit price from $1500 to $1800 justification is that mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable National park require continuous 24/7 protection. The revenue generated from these gorilla habituation permits directly funds:

  • Anti-poaching patrols and equipment for rangers in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable where gorilla habituation is done
  • Ongoing mountain gorilla research, health monitoring, and natural habitat protection to prevent human-wildlife disease transmission in Bwindi impenetrable National Park.
  1. Boosting Community Revenue Sharing efforts

By law, Uganda Wildlife Authority shares a percentage of all park permit revenues directly with the local communities living along the borders of the national parks in Rushaga and Nkuringo. This increment therefore is geared to community development since funds channeled to community projects will slightly increase.

  • Increasing the price of gorilla habituation permits raises the direct funding given to local schools, clinics, and infrastructure projects hence development of areas where the communities benefit.
  • This economic incentive from sell of gorilla permits and share given to community projects is vital because when the locals benefit financially from gorilla habituation tourism, they actively protect and help curb illegal poaching or encroachment of gorillas and their natural habitats in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
  1. Regional Pricing Strategy (Rwanda versus Uganda)

Even with the increase in the price of gorilla habituation permits from$1500 to $1800, Uganda strategically maintains a highly competitive edge over Rwanda and DRC. For comparison, a standard one-hour gorilla trek permit  in Rwanda costs $1,500 USD. By positioning Uganda’s standard trek permit at $800 and its massive four-hour habituation experience at $1,800, UWA maximizes conservation revenue while still offering an attractive value for money.

Mathematically still, to enjoy four hours with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, it requires you to buy four permits each at $1500 which is $6000 yet Uganda’s gorilla habituation experience permit that gives you four hours is only $1800.

You also will need four days to do four hours in Rwanda yet fours hours with mountain gorillas in Uganda can be achieved in one day saving you time, costs on accommodation and other services since you need few days. By increasing the prices still does not affect Uganda’s competitiveness while it helps in raising funds.

Competitiveness of gorilla habituation experience

Uganda Wildlife Authority only offers four gorilla habituation permits per gorilla family and there only two families dedicated to this experience. This means that only 8 gorilla permits are available for booking daily.

Because of the advantage and magical experience of this activity, it has become one of the most booked in Bwindi. To take advantage of this competition, Uganda Wildlife Authority sought it wise to slightly increase the price by just $300 which will boost conservation efforts of mountain gorillas without affecting the market.

HOW TO BOOK GORILLA HABITUATION PERMITS

Because only 4 gorilla habituation permits are issued by UWA per habituated gorilla family per day (unlike the 8 permits per day for standard groups), booking a gorilla habituation permit requires a bit more foresight and should be done in advance if possible.

There are two principal ways to book and secure your gorilla habituation permit through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

Option 1: Book Through a Licensed Local Safari Company (Highly Recommended)

Encounter Africa Safaris is a fully licensed Tour company and has access to Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla permit booking system. When contacted we will make sure that all hassles are taken care of. For purposes of this post,

  • Step 1: Choose a reputable Safari company registered with the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO). Encounter Africa Safaris is licensed by UTB and is a member of AUTO so we foot the bill.
  • Step 2: Provide us with your exact preferred dates (and a few fallback options) along with a scanned copy of your passport (needed to verify age—minimum 15 years—and identity by Uganda Wildlife Authority).
  • Step 3: Encounter Africa Safaris staff will check the UWA portal, hold the permit tentatively for one day, and invoice you for the same.
  • Step 4: Once you pay by Credit card or Bank transfer, we will buy your gorilla habituation permit at UWA headquarters in Kampala and send you a scanned copy of the receipt featuring your official booking ID for your records.

Encounter Africa Safaris will seamlessly sync your permit with the rest of your logistics such as transport, accommodation and other park fees needed for your safari. Gorilla habituation experience only takes place in the Rushaga sector (southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park). Booking a permit in the wrong sector can ruin a trip, as driving between sectors can take hours over rough roads.  That’s why booking with Encounter Africa safaris saves you of such confusions.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
