Why is Kibale Chimpanzee trekking very expensive in Africa
August 8, 2026
Kibale chimpanzee trekking is considered expensive because it is Africa's premier and top-notch primate trekking destination, offering a near-guaranteed sighting success rate driven by strict conservation and demand management by Uganda Wildlife Authority.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority a body in charge of all National Parks in Uganda sets standard chimpanzee permit prices at $250 to $300 USD per person for foreign non-residents looking at visiting chimpanzees, which is significantly higher than other chimpanzee habitats across East Africa including Uganda’s Bugoma forest, Karinzu, Kyambura gorge as well as Nyungwe forest National Park in Rwanda.
Booking chimpanzee trekking permits for Kibale National Park encompasses locking your space through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA)—either directly (not recommended) or via a licensed Ugandan tour operator like Encounter Africa safaris.
When contacted, Encounter Africa safaris will check availability of chimpanzee permits on your preferred dates. This is very possible because we have access to Uganda Wildlife Authority online booking system. Are you looking for availability? Please get in touch.
Once availability of Kibale chimpanzee permits is confirmed, we will request you to send us your clear passport copies as they are needed by UWA. UWA requires us to send full name, nationality, date of birth, and passport number to issue personalized permits and also establish if you meet the age for chimp trekking or if you are East African, African, resident or nonresident as this determines the price.
Encounter Africa safaris will then invoice you for full payment of Kibale chimpanzee permits which can be paid by bank transfer or credit card. Once payment is received on our end, we will proceed to pay for and secure your permits. Please note that the UWA booking system allows us to hold these permits for only three days.
Once secured, we will send you copies for your records and you will find your original copies with us when you finally come for your chimpanzee trekking tour.
Kindly note that for you to qualify for Kibale chimpanzee trekking experiences, you must be 12 years and above. For more information about age limit for chimp trekking in Kibale National Park, please contact us.
