WHY IS GORILLA TREKKING IN UGANDA CHEAPER DURING LOW SEASON

March 26, 2026

WHY IS GORILLA TREKKING IN UGANDA CHEAPER DURING LOW SEASON

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is cheaper during the low season months of April, May, and November, primarily referred to as rainy seasons. The same month coincides with Spring and Autumn seasons in Europe where most people are working.

Because of the above, Uganda Wildlife Authority in particular offers low season gorilla permits to encourage more tourists to visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park for gorilla trekking experience during low season months of April, May, and November.

Most Popular Safaris

5 Days Gorillas & Game Safari

3 Day Murchison Falls National Park safari

3 Day Fly in Gorilla Habituation Safari

3 Day Lake Mburo wildlife, boat & walking safari

3 Day Queen Elizabeth wildlife safari

4 Day Kidepo Valley Fly in Safari

3 Day Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking safari

16 Days Primates, Game & Culture

2 Day Lake Mburo game & Boat safari

19 Day Best of Uganda Safari

Other reasons that make Gorilla trekking in Uganda cheaper during the low season include low rates on accommodation, discounted international flights, domestic flight discounts, reduced rates on transportation by vehicle hire companies and tour operators, complimentary lodge services in Uganda, as well as negotiable tour packages.

REASONS WHY GORILLA TREKKING IN UGANDA IS CHEAPER DURING LOW SEASON.

Discounted Gorilla permit price: Effective April 2026 Uganda Wildlife Authority is offering low season discounted gorilla permits for foreign residents at $600 (from $800), meaning that whoever visits Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park in April, May and or November will save up to $200 on each gorilla permit purchased.

Low season gorilla permits are issued on a first come first serve basis and can not be rescheduled to another date. Make sure you have clear dates before purchase. Individuals above 15 years old are allowed to book these permits through a licensed tour operator such as Encounter Africa safaris. Get in touch for more details.

Low season accommodation rates: Uganda lodges, Hotels and Campsites in or near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park offer reduced rates on bed and meals during April May and November.

Low season accommodation rates are normally extended to registered and licensed tour operators who in turn, transfer them to their clients. This makes gorilla trekking in Uganda cheaper during low season months of April, May and November since those who choose to travel may end up benefiting from about 15% to 35% off peak accommodation discounts.

Discounts on International flights to Uganda: In order to attract travelers to Uganda, most Airlines tend to lower their travel fares and air tickets during April, May and November making it slightly less expensive to travel from Europe, America or Asia to Uganda.

It’s advised to book your flights a year or 7 months in advance to take advantage of low season rates as well as early bird discounts offered by Airline companies.

Reduced transport costs: Encounter Africa safaris offers off-season transportation rates to our esteemed tourists who book tours to visit gorillas in Bwindi and Mgahinga during low season months of April, May and November.

Enjoy travelling in our 4x4 luxury Land Cruisers or safari vans at reduced prices when you book an all-inclusive off season gorilla trekking safari with Encounter Africa safaris.

Off season Domestic Flight offers: Travellers who book all-inclusive fly-in safaris during low seasons to Bwindi or Mgahinga stand to benefit from off season domestic flight rates negotiated by Encounter Africa Safaris. This makes gorilla trekking in Uganda cheaper during low season months of April, May and November.

Aerolink and other private Airline companies offer daily scheduled and charter flights to Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks from Entebbe Airport to Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrips where our vehicles are able to transfer you by road from the respective Airstrip to your overnight Lodge in Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park.

The above reasons make gorilla trekking in Uganda cheaper during low season and to tap in the above offers, please get in touch with one of our safari designers.

ADVANTAGES OF TREKKING UGANDA MOUNTAIN GORILLAS DURING LOW SEASON.

Last-minute arrangements possible: It’s mainly during low season months of March, April, May and November where last minute gorilla trekking are very possible. This is because gorilla permits and other services such as accommodation and vehicles are easier to get without prior or advanced booking.

A gorilla trek can thus be arranged in one day and all services will be available. Do not hesitate to contact Encounter Africa safaris for your last-minute gorilla trek to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga.

Negotiable safari tour off season packages: Encounter Africa safaris just like most tour operators in Uganda offer off season gorilla trekking safaris to all our esteemed clients. We work closely with service providers who offer low season discounted rates that give you room to negotiate with us reduced offers on tours.

Limitless gorilla family choice: During low season, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is visited by few tourists. It’s during such a time that tourists can ask of a gorilla family of their choice. Bwindi National Park has over 20 habituated gorilla groups each with distinctive features. While some families have many members, others have kids, while others are friendly.

Depending on your choice, you will likely achieve it easily during low season. Endeavor to express your interest on the very day of trekking, where you will then be allocated a gorilla family of your choice.

Shorter gorilla trekking excursion distances: They are called mountain gorillas because they only survive in mountainous forested environments. As a matter of fact, these giant creatures wonder during the day in search for food.

During rainy seasons of April, May and November, these mountain gorillas often feed on lower slopes, making your gorilla trekking excursions and experience shorter and less physically demanding.

low season gorilla trekking

Exclusive gorilla treks with no surcharge possible: During low season in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, there less tourists compared to habituated gorilla families. So, if you are interested in trekking a certain gorilla family on your own, chances are very high and you will not be asked to pay for extra permits as it is during high season.

Smaller groups of 2-4 groups can be accommodated per gorilla family without any extra fees.  Are you a family?  A couple on honeymoon and want to take advantage of this? Please get in touch with Encounter Africa, and we will arrange for this. We cannot guarantee this since it is the mandate of UWA staff on the day of trekking.

Complimentary Lodge services: Most luxury and Mid range Lodges in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park may offer free addons auch as massage, spa treatments, or community walks to their clients. Some of these are not possible during high season months of June, July, August, September, December, January and February.

MIND WHAT YOU PACK FOR YOUR LOW SEASON GORILLA TREK

April, May and November are predominantly rainy seasons, so all those interested in visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga for gorilla trekking must prioritize waterproof gear that dry quickly to be able to survive in rainy and muddy environments on a daily.

Therefore, items such as waterproof hiking boots, jackets, garden gloves, long-sleeved shirts, waterproof trousers, insect repellants, camera and phone protection, among others will come in handy.

BOOK YOUR OFF-SEASON GORILLA TREK WITH CONFIDENCE

Encounter Africa safaris is an indigenous and reputable Safari company with over 20 years of managing and executing gorilla treks in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. We combine gorilla trekking with safari in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda to offer you an amazing experience. All our packages are aimed at satisfying our clients' interests, budget, and time. Everything went smoothly: Transfers, accommodation, meals and activities were excellently coordinated. The highlight was of course the encounters with the gorillas in Bwindi National Park and the chimpanzees in Kibale Forest – an unforgettable experience we will never forget. Our guide deserves special praise. He was not only extremely competent and experienced, but also incredibly friendly, helpful and flexible. Thanks to his warm nature we felt safe and well looked after throughout the trip. He told us a lot about nature, wildlife and life in Uganda and made the trip very special. We can fully recommend this tour – it was a perfectly organized, varied and unforgettable trip through a beautiful country with warm people.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
