What Is Included And Excluded In A Golden Monkey Permit Of Uganda And Rwanda

What Is Included And Excluded In A Golden Monkey Permit Of Uganda And Rwanda

What is included and excluded in a golden monkey permit of Uganda and Rwanda? Golden monkey permits include the ranger guide fees but exclude items of a personal nature, like tips. Golden monkeys are a special monkey species with a body structure larger than normal. They live in communities with an alpha male as their leader.

Scientifically, golden monkeys are called Cercopithecus mitis kandti but are very charming compared to other monkey species. Their unique golden brown hairs at the lower bottom exclude them from other monkey species.

Although golden monkeys are first habituated to humans' presence, they still possess their exciting nature, so get ready to stay on your toes during golden monkeys' trekking or habituation experience. Even though golden monkey trekking is a restless adventure, it's fun to add to your Africa primate safari to-do bucket list.

In the entire world, the population of golden monkeys is about 3000 to 4000, but only living in the Virunga area.

Rwanda has golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park. Uganda's golden monkeys live in Mgahinga National Park on the northern side of the three distinctive Volcanoes, which Uganda shares with Rwanda. Mountain Gahinga, Mountain Sabyinyo, and Mountain Muhavura separate the boundaries of the Mgahinga National Park and Volcanoes National Park.

What is Golden Monkey trekking?

Golden monkey trekking is an adventure where tourists follow a fully habituated troop of golden monkeys in the wilderness and stay with them for one hour. Maximum 8 tourists are allowed to do golden Monkey trekking to minimize the effects of mass tourism.

What is the Golden monkey's habituation experience?

The golden monkey habituation experience is an adventure where tourists escort a team of researchers and trackers to follow a semi-habituated golden monkey community and stay with them for four hours.

A maximum of 4 tourists are allowed to accompany a team of researchers and trackers and stay with them for four hours.

What is included in the cost of a Golden Monkey permit?

Ranger guide fees

Ranger guides deserve to be paid for their dedicated work to protect the golden monkeys and their habitats. They also provide detailed explanations during golden monkey adventure tourists, and all this is accumulated from constant research and experience.

No person on safari would like to be in the company of a boring and less knowledgeable ranger guide, as this makes your trip boring, and you receive less value for money.

After the Golden Monkey safari, you can also tip your ranger guide to appreciate the service rendered and encourage them to continue supporting wildlife conservation.

Securing during Golden Monkeys Safari

A well-trained ranger guard of at least two rangers escorts each tourist group on a golden monkey adventure. One holds a rifle, and another a machete in case you need defense while moving in the forest.

The range guides often communicate with the station rangers to keep them abreast of what could happen in the wilderness. In case the need for backup arises, they are on standby.

To avoid forgetting anyone in the wilderness, the ranger guide follows the pace of the slowest trekker. Tourists are advised not to stray from the rest during the golden monkeys' adventure so that no one is forgotten in the forest.

Time with the Golden Monkeys

One hour is allowed with the fully habituated golden monkeys, while four hours are allowed with the semi-habituated golden monkeys. Time is restricted during gorilla trekking or habituation to let these primates run their day-to-day life. They need to feed on enough that can support their bodies through the day and night.

Golden monkey conservation

Golden monkeys are listed among the world's endangered primates, so they need to be conserved. Whenever you purchase a Golden Monkey permit, you support the conservation program.

Some funds are required to create more golden monkey communities open for trekking and habituation experiences. This covers the costs incurred during the habituation experience, which may take an unknown time.

Local community support

The local people need to be involved in conserving the golden monkeys, other forest dwellers, and their fragile habitats. When you purchase the golden monkey permit, you contribute to the annual token given to the local community by the Uganda Wildlife Authority or Rwanda Development Board to make up for the losses these animals make in the local community.

When this harmony is created, the local community is encouraged to report the staying wild animal to the responsible authorities instead of killing it.

They used the funds forwarded to the local community to do road maintenance, upgrade local schools and health centers, create and upgrade water sources, and so much more.

Briefing time

Before proceeding with golden monkey trekking, you need to gather for a briefing from the ranger. Now, you learn more about the golden monkeys and their traits. You also get deeper into the golden monkey safari guidelines to be comfortable with these charming primates.

Government tax

On every Golden Monkey's permit sale, the government levies a taxi, which is used to support the tourism industry and other government responsibilities.

What is excluded from the cost of the Golden Monkey permit?

Accommodation during the Golden Monkey Safari

It would be best to spend the nights of your golden monkey safari within or on the outskirts of the golden monkey destinations. You must wake up early to catch up with the briefing and start the trek.

Failure to attend the briefing may be one of the reasons to disqualify you from Golden Monkey Safari. The Virunga area is very sensitive as it is home to mountain gorillas, the highlight of this destination. If you cause chaos with the golden monkeys, the gorilla trekking or habituation experience may be disrupted, too.

Transport to Golden Monkey destinations

Golden Monkey trekking is done in remote areas that require suitable transport, especially a 4x4 wheel drive vehicle. You must provide your transportation to the Golden Monkey destinations.

You can go by air too. Daily domestic flights from Entebbe airport or Kajjansi to Kisoro airstrip are in Uganda. You have to hire a transfer vehicle too, as the airstrip is some distance of about one and a half hours away.

Charter flight services are available from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip in Uganda. From Kigali airport, you can charter to Volcanoes National Park.

Park entrance fees

Every person must pay park entrance fees before being allowed access to either Uganda or Rwanda National Park. Park entrance fees are funds used to support the conservation of wild animals and their habitats.

The park entrance fees last 24 hours from when you enter.

This fee is paid to the Uganda Wildlife Authority or Rwanda Development Board.

Any other item Of a personal nature

To enjoy the golden monkey trekking safari, you need some gear that you must include on your packing list, like insect repellants, long-sleeved shirts, safari caps, and others. You need to carry some cash in case you need to purchase some souvenirs and so much more. All these are excluded from the golden monkey permit for Uganda and Rwanda.

When is the best time to do Golden Monkey trekking?

Although golden monkey trekking is an all-year-round adventure, the dry season is most preferred by tourists. The dry season is normally June, July, August, September, December and January. The golden monkeys are active during the dry season, and if you want to attend their best show, this is the time.

The ground is less soggy during the dry season, and trails are passable since rivers are contained in their ordinary course.

During the wet season, which normally runs in March, April, May, and November, golden monkeys love spending most of their time in the branches. They fear the wet ground, and in case the rivers overflow, these monkeys fear to walk through the soggy ground.

It would be best to prepare for your golden monkey safari upfront, as the number of participants is limited to a maximum of 8 per troop.

How long is golden monkey trekking?

Finding the golden monkeys depends on the proximity of their food, weather conditions prevailing in the day, the pace of the trekkers, and others. Only one hour is permitted with the mountain gorillas during Golden Monkey trekking.

It would be best if you had some fitness to succeed with golden monkeys trekking as the topography of this area is volcanic, and sometimes you have to hike to find these primates. To avoid getting bored and idolizing, you need an open mind instead of focusing on finding the golden monkeys. The forests have other inhabitants like black and white colobus, vervet monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabey, and red-tailed monkeys, to mention but a few.

Upon finding the golden monkeys, only one hour is permitted during golden monkey trekking and four hours for golden monkey habituation experience.

How Aggressive Are Golden Monkeys?

Golden monkeys are habituated for a reasonable time before allowing humans to visit. Despite their charming nature, they are not violent, but you must follow the Golden Monkey's safari rules. Try to avoid mimicking these primates because you are not sure of what you are saying.

Never try to test their patience, like touching the infant of these golden monkeys, because the community may go wild or pounce on you.

When angry, the golden monkeys may hoot, giggle, move fast from one branch to another, and go into hiding. It is not all the time that they show these signs that they are angry with visitors. Once you notice such behaviors, listen to the advice of the ranger guide because they know best how to deal with them.

What Is The Age Limit For Golden Monkey Safari?

15 years and beyond is the age limit for the Golden Monkeys safari because of the nature of the topography of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga National Park. This volcanic area is made up of ridges and plateaus, which you may need to hike sometimes to find these primates. A child below this age may not withstand this strenuous attempt.

The duration of finding the golden monkeys and the return time is unpredictable. Children below 15 years may not be in a position to wait and complete the adventure as the chances of getting tired are high.

How Difficult Is Golden Monkey Adventure in Uganda or Rwanda?

The Golden Monkey adventure is strenuous, as you need to hike through steep slopes and deep valleys. For someone who is not fit, this may be a challenge. The golden monkeys enjoy most of their time up in the trees, sometimes tangled with thick undergrowth and creepers. It would be best to be very observant to see them.

As this adventure requires your active participation, the ground is soggy and slippery from the unpredictable rains that fall, yet less sunlight is let in through the dense canopy. This may be challenging to maneuver during a golden monkey safari.

Because of these parks' many years of existence, the trees are huge, with protruding buttress roots hidden in creepers. You need to walk carefully while doing a golden monkey adventure.

The ranger with a machete uses it to trim the obstructing vegetation on your way to find the golden monkeys.

What Assurance Can I Have To Find The Golden Monkeys in Uganda or Rwanda?

Golden monkeys are very active primates, but there is a 95% chance of finding them. The community of these golden monkeys is first habituated before allowing the public to view them without altering their nature.

Although the number of these golden monkeys is limited, be sure to see them in the wilderness. Before doing the golden monkey adventure, you must attend a briefing where guidelines on how to be with these charming monkeys are given. You need to religiously follow them to not agitate them.

Golden monkeys are quite interesting creatures. Contact us for more information to book your safari and get to know more about the golden monkeys.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
