To do a gorilla habituation experience in Uganda, the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the only destination where you can attend this activity. The southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park comprises the Rushaga and Nkuringo areas. So far, two gorilla families are open for gorilla habituation experience, but only a maximum of four tourists are allowed to accompany a team of researchers and trackers per day.

What is the gorilla habituation experience?

The gorilla habituation experience is an adventure where a maximum of four tourists can escort a team of researchers in the wilderness to follow a semi-habituated gorilla family and have four hours in their company.

Currently, Uganda has 8 gorilla permits open for gorilla habituation experience per day. A first come, first served basis is used to purchase permits for gorilla habituation experience. When you find availability, you must purchase the gorilla permit as soon as possible to avoid last-minute panic while trying to find a permit.

What Is The Cost Of Gorilla Habituation Experience Permit?

A gorilla habituation permit costs $1500 per person per trek for foreign nonresidents, $1000 for foreign residents, and 750000shs for East African residents. The cost of a gorilla habituation experience permit cost includes researcher fees, park entrance fees, local community support, security during gorilla safari, four hours with the mountain gorillas, ranger guide fees, and mountain gorilla conservation, to mention but a few.

What is included in the budget gorilla habituation experience safari?

Gorilla habituation experience

The gorilla habituation experience is an adventure where tourists escort a team of researchers in the wilderness to follow a semi-habituated gorilla family and spend four hours with them. These mountain gorillas still possess wild traits like hiding upon seeing anything odd, hooting at visitors, and much more.

This adventure starts very early to trace the nesting location of the gorilla family, their day hangout and lounging place. Tourists may be asked to take some notes while observing the interactions among the family members. Mountain Gorillas under habituation experience are still very skeptical of intruders in their vicinity.

On the day of the gorilla habituation experience, all tourists gather at the ranger station for briefing, no matter the safari package they are booked to. All have to register at the ranger station to attend gorilla habituation.

Accommodation for gorilla habituation experience

Within the budget gorilla habituation experience package is accommodation in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. When you hope to do a budget gorilla safari, you must spend the nights with or close to the gorilla habituation safari destination.

When you spend the night in another location, you may need to drive in the dark to catch up with the early morning briefing. The nature of the roads connecting to the different areas of Bwindi impenetrable national Park is in poor condition sometimes because of the volcanic soil and regular rains that fall, yet there is less sunray penetration to the ground.

You can overnight in the Rushaga or Nkuringo areas before the gorilla habituation experience.

Southern Bwindi Accommodation: Nshongi Camp, Bwindi Packpacker's Camp, Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge

Transport To Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You can travel by road to air to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. If you choose to transport by road, you need a 4x4 wheel drive vehicle as the countryside roads sometimes need improvement. The drive time from Kampala or Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park may take about 8 to 9 hours.

The route to the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Entebbe/ Kampala-Kabale- Nkuringo. From Kampala to Kabale, the distance is about 414 kilometers, then continues to Nkuringo for about 105 kilometers. You may overnight in Kisoro town, about 80 kilometers from Kabale, and connect to the southern part of Bwindi, which is about 35 kilometers away, driving for approximately 1 hour and fifteen minutes.

Daily domestic flights from Entebbe Airport to Kisoro Airstrip are available, but you must hire a transfer vehicle to the lodge or camp. One needs to secure a seat in advance because they sell out early.

Hiring a safari van for a budget gorilla habituation experience may suit this safari.

Gas or fuel

To get to the gorilla habituation experience destination, you need a gas or fuel tank because driving deep in the countryside makes the refueling stations rarer. You must have a full tank to avoid getting stuck in the middle of the journey.

Having some hard cash is very important if you are on self-drive, as most fuel stations in Uganda do not use credit cards to purchase gas.

Additional Activities To Combine With Gorilla Habituation Safari

You can combine gorilla habituation experience with other activities in Uganda, depending on the number of safari days. The least number of days on gorilla habituation experience is 3 days Uganda gorilla habituation safari.

In case you have more days on your African holiday, you can do activities like chimpanzee trekking, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park or Murchison Falls National Park, Launch trips, visiting the source of the River Nile, white water rafting, excursion hiking, visit tranquil Ssese Island or Lake Bunyonyi to mention but a few.

Experienced Driver Guide

Even though it's a budget gorilla habituation experience safari, you need a professional driver guide. Taking a holiday with a knowledgeable guide keeps you interested to learn more about the destination. Although gorilla habituation is conducted by rangers and researchers, on the way, you would like to learn more about Uganda and its exciting safari activities.

This can only be interesting with a professional and knowledgeable driver guide.

Park entrances fees

Every visitor to a National Park must pay park entrance fees to support the conservation effort. The park entrance fees are included when you purchase the gorilla habituation permit. For the game parks, the park entrance fees are paid separately.

When you pay park entrance fees, they are operational from when you enter the park till 24 hours.

Researcher fees

Researchers and trackers with raw knowledge about the traits of the gorilla family under habituation experience conduct gorilla habituation experience. Although more information about the gorilla family is still being collected, the researcher has some possible information to give to habituators.

They need funds to support their work as they collect samples from these mountain gorillas, which they experiment on, note down traits of the mountain gorillas, identify mountain gorillas by name, and so much more. When you purchase a gorilla habituation safari, this is included in the gorilla permit.

What is excluded in a budget gorilla habituation experience safari

International flights

When you book a budget gorilla habituation experience, international flights are excluded. It would be best if you pre-booked them with your travel agent. If you arrive late to start the journey to southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you may disorganize your trip and not arrive in time for the gorilla safari.

To avoid any chances of missing your gorilla habituation experience, book international flights into Entebbe Airport or Kigali Airport for those doing gorilla habituation in Uganda through Rwanda in advance.

Drinks other than the free drinking water bottle in the vehicle

It would be best to quench your thirst during the gorilla habituation safari even though this area is cold most of the day. Drinking water on your way to the briefing point of your gorilla habituation experience keeps you moving when you thirst. You can accompany this with snacks to munch on and re-energize because breakfast is taken too early to last the entire time in the wilderness. The time of locating the mountain gorillas is still being determined, too.

Carrying a foldable drinking water bottle is a great move.

Tips

Tipping is a token of appreciation for the excellent service rendered, but it is not compulsory. In the budget, gorilla habituation safari is not included, but to encourage the ranger guides, drivers, porters, and others to continue supporting gorilla conservation in their spheres.

Tipping is one of the direct ways to give back to the local people as they use the money collected to support the running of their day-to-day lives.

No specific amount is suggested for tipping, but we encourage our clients to tip generously to support the local people.

Porter

A porter is a local person who helps you carry your bags and gives you a push while you search for the mountain gorillas. Porter are local community members who also help preach about the importance of keeping the mountain gorillas in their environment to their fellow community members.

When you hire a porter to contribute to the conservation plan, these locals return to the community with funds that support their day-to-day lives rather than depend on the forest.

You can hire a porter after the briefing to carry your gorilla safari gear to walk in the wilderness without anything stopping you.

Any other personal activities or items

When an itinerary for gorilla habituation is tailored, it's to your needs, but if you engage in activities that include, it's your expenditure. You may wish to know more about the gorilla safari destination or do a community walk; this becomes personal if it still needs to be added to the drafted itinerary.

Guidelines for Gorilla Habituation Experience

  • In case you catch a communicable infection, volunteer to stay behind. The mountain gorillas are susceptible to these infections.
  • No littering the forest because it is where the food for the mountain gorillas grows. If you dump indecomposable garbage, it may alter the nature of the forest.
  • No surrounding the mountain gorillas when you meet them. This makes them feel ambushed.
  • When eating or smoking, do this beyond 300 meters away from the gorillas to avoid the chances of them grabbing it from you. They are wild animals that must not depend on human provision.
  • Spitting on vegetation is forbidden because it may contaminate the food for the mountain gorillas, spreading germs to them.
  •  When you locate the mountain gorillas, stand about 8 meters from them to reduce the chances of spreading germs to them or to you.
  • Provoking the Mountain gorillas is forbidden because they may get agitated by what you do to them.
  • When taking photographs before the mountain gorillas, do it using no flash photography because they are often scared of unfamiliar occurrences in their presence?
  • Wearing a mask before finding the gorilla is a must. It must Be at least N95 as a measure taken to reduce the chances of passing the coronavirus infection to the mountain gorillas. Sanitize your footwear before stepping into the forest to start gorilla trekking.
  • Children aged 15 years are forbidden from attending gorilla trekking because of the matters surrounding this experience, like the time of locating the mountain gorillas is unknown. Some level of patience is needed, which may be hard to deal with when searching for a child. The forest is sometimes slippery, yet you may need to hike to the mountain gorillas. This may be challenging for a child of this age.
  • When you locate the mountain gorillas, only one hour can be with them. They need to go about their daily activities.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
