To connect to Buhoma is from Lake Bunyonyi or Kabale, which takes about 95 kilometers, which is about 3 hours to 4 hours drive. Unfortunately, this area is highly mountainous with a wrong road, so you need a 4×4 wheel drive vehicle with volcanic soils that are slippery at times, especially during the severe rainy seasons.
It is quicker to do gorilla trekking to the Ruhijah area or Buhoma area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park from Kabale or Lake Bunyonyi. Ruhijah area is composed Bitukura family, Oruzogo family, Kyaguriro Family and Makisa family. Buhoma area is made up of Rushegura family, Mubare family and Habinyanja family. However, you must also reserve accommodation in or closer to this area to avoid driving so early to catch up with a briefing in another place.

Mountain gorillas are naturally serene animals that are shy. The body structure looks scary because of the dark-furred cover and deeply sunken eyes, but they are calm primates in nature. In the history of gorilla trekking, no one has ever been attacked by mountain gorillas.
Everybody must respect and implement the rules of gorilla trekking and the information given during the briefing. Mountain gorillas have general rules, but each gorilla family has its traits that may not be with others.
When mountain gorillas get angry, they thump their chests, walk with one foot, pull grass around them, and may retreat into hiding. Remember, only one hour is allowed in the presence of the mountain gorillas, so you need to maximize every minute to the fullest.

Gorilla habituation
This is following semi-habituated mountain gorillas in the jungle to get accustomed to human presence. However, these mountain gorillas still show wild behaviors, so expect them to hide sometimes.
In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the southern part is the gorilla habituation location with so far two families open.
You must purchase a gorilla habituation permit to be allowed to participate. Four hours are allowed with the mountain gorillas when you locate them. Only a maximum of 4 people is allowed to escort the habituations and ranger guides.
Birding in Bwindi Forest and Mgahinga Forest
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the Uganda birding haven having over 350 bird species, including Albertine endemics. In addition, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has about 23 species of 24 known Albertine rift endemics known to be living in Uganda.
The Ruhijah area is the prime birding destination for this park, and when you take Mubwindi Swamp, you may spot over 100 bird species. Some birds you may spot include Western Green Tinkerbird, African Green Broadbill, Shelley’s Crimmsonwig, African Hill Babbler, Collared Apalis, Montane Sooty Boubou, and others.
Mgahinga forest has over 115 bird species, through the list is still expanding because fewer ornithologists have so far picked interest in this park.

The cave was a retreat point for the Batwa after raiding the Bafumbira farmlands. At the moment, it provides an atmospheric setting for Batwa performances.
