Things to Do in Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve
September 5, 2026
Things to do in Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. When travelers think about traveling to Uganda for a safari, the famous parks that come to mind are Bwindi, Murchison, and Queen Elizabeth National Parks. Yet in the northeastern part of Uganda lies Pian Upe, a hidden, remote Wildlife Reserve. This is one of Uganda’s largest and least explored protected areas. Pian Upe Reserve covers vast savannah plains, ruwa
ocky outcrops, seasonal wetlands and also offers wilderness experiences that feel untouched.
Unlike the national parks that are busier, Pian Upe is perfect for travelers that love solitude and the thrill of encountering wildlife in a truly wild landscape. Are you planning a trip to Karamoja or a destination that is off the beaten path? Here are some of the things to do in Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve;
A highlight of any visit to Pian Upe Reserve is exploring the open savannah by vehicle. The open savannah of the reserve makes wildlife viewing very rewarding and since visitor numbers are low, the wildlife sightings are often exclusive and feel intimate.
During a game drive in Pian Upe Reserve, you may encounter elands, Jackson’s hartebeests, oribis, Uganda kobs, ostriches, buffaloes and many more. Predators found in the reserve include wildcats, jackals, spotted hyenas, serval cats and lions are also periodically seen in Pian. For wildlife enthusiasts interested in rare species, Pian Upe is one of the few places to spot the roan antelopes.
Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to go for game drives when temperatures are cooler and animals are more active. The golden light over the endless plains creates exceptional photography opportunities.
Accompanied by a Uganda Wildlife Authority armed ranger, visitors can explore the reserve on foot and learn more about animal tracks, medicinal plants, birdlife, and the ecology of the Pian Upe.
Nature walks are more rewarding near the seasonal water sources where you can see birds and smaller mammals together. This experience is immersive with the sounds of the birds, wind, insects and distant wildlife around you.
Pian Upe is surprisingly one of the best destinations for birdwatching, with more than 300 recorded bird species. The mixture of grasslands, wetlands, and rocky habitats attracts both resident and migratory birds.
There are demarcated trails in Pian Upe that give birders a good birdwatching experience and some of the bird species include the Secretary Bird, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Ostrich, Karamoja Apalis, Fox’s Weaver, and various raptors soaring above the plains. The reserve is particularly appealing because many of the birds found here are associated with the drier northeastern ecosystems that differ from the forests and wetlands of southern Uganda.
Ensure to carry binoculars to make this experience even more interesting.

Beyond Pian Upe’s flat savannah, it is dotted with rocky kopjes and hills that add dramatic scenery to the reserve. Short hikes to these elevated points provide great views across the plains and are perfect for travelers who enjoy wildlife safari with a little adventure.
The rocks are also significantly important to the local communities, and some areas contain ancient features and traditional stories that are connected to the Karamojong people. Also watching the sunset from one of the elevated points is a truly unforgettable experience as the sky turns to shades of orange, pink and deep purple.
A visit to Pian Upe Reserve is not only about wildlife, but also an opportunity to encounter the famous Karimojong. They are one of Uganda’s pastoral communities. Travellers can visit the nearest manyattas(traditional homesteads) where they get to learn about cattle keeping, traditional dress, and dances among others.
The Karimojong have lived in harmony with this harsh but beautiful environment for generations, and their culture is deeply connected to the land. Cultural visits provide valuable insight into a way of life that remains very different from urban Uganda.
Because accommodation options around Pian Upe are still fairly limited and simple, many visitors find that camping offers the most authentic way to experience the reserve. Spending a night out in the wilderness gives you a chance to listen to the sounds of nature after dark—from the calls of night birds to the occasional movement of animals somewhere in the distance. It is a peaceful experience that feels far removed from the noise and distractions of everyday life.
Another unforgettable part of camping here is the night sky. With very little artificial light in the area, the stars appear incredibly bright and numerous, especially on clear nights. Sitting around a campfire and looking up at the sky feels less like a typical safari and more like a genuine adventure in the African wilderness.
Pian Upe can be combined with other destinations in eastern and northeastern Uganda. Travelers can proceed to Sipi Falls, visit Kidepo Valley National Park for a more extensive game safari experience.
Combining Pian Upe and Sipi Falls creates a truly rewarding itinerary i.e. waterfalls, coffee experiences, hiking and remote savannah wildlife experience all in one journey.
Pian Upe can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons (December to March and June to September) are generally the most comfortable for wildlife viewing. Roads are easier to navigate, vegetation is shorter, and animals tend to concentrate around available water sources.
The wetter months bring greener scenery and excellent birdwatching opportunities, although some tracks may become more challenging to access.
Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve is one of Uganda’s treasured hidden safari destinations. Its vast open landscapes, rare wildlife, excellent birdlife, and strong cultural connections make it a destination unlike any other in the country. Rather than offering crowded game-viewing circuits, Pian Upe provides a sense of space, solitude, and discovery that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in Africa’s more famous safari parks.
Whether you are searching for cheetahs on the savannah, walking through untouched wilderness, photographing ostriches against dramatic sunsets, or learning about Karimojong traditions, Pian Upe rewards travelers with an authentic and unforgettable adventure in Uganda’s wild northeast.
