The gorilla habituation experience is an adventure where a maximum of four tours accompany a team of researchers and habituators to take four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family. What to consider before booking a gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience safari from 2024 to 2025

Book the gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience permits

The gorilla and chimpanzee, habituation experience safari, can only be confirmed with a permit. All the plans you have to make for this primate adventure involve gaining the permits first.

To book a gorilla or chimpanzee habituation permit, you must have a date and the number of eligible people you hope to travel with.

At Encounter Africa Safaris, we can assist you in securing the gorilla and chimpanzee habituation permits when you present us with these details. The gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience cannot be done in one day because the destinations where they happen are apart, so you need a day or two apart.

Since gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience has limited numbers opened to the public daily, a maximum of 4 permits per gorilla family or chimpanzee community booking is required.

The best time to book a gorilla or chimpanzee habituation experience permit is at least six months to a year upfront. Last-minute gorilla and chimpanzee permits are challenging to find during the peak season: June, July, August, September, December, and January.

Upon getting your inquiry, our consultant checked availability from the Uganda Wildlife Authority permit history and get back to you as soon as possible.

We advise clients to secure their gorilla or chimpanzee permits upon finding availability because their status changes anytime without warning. A first come, first served policy is used to book these permits. A gorilla or chimpanzee safari permit can only be reserved with payment. Last-minute gorilla and chimpanzee safari permits are challenging to find at the last minute.

Later, present us with your details, like your full name, nationality, and date of birth, for identification purposes.

Select Accommodations To Use During Gorilla And Chimpanzee Habituation Experience Safari

Southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is currently the only home to gorilla habituation experience in Uganda, so you must book accommodations within or closer to this area. Two areas comprise the southern part of Bwindi: thee, the Nkuringo and Rushaga areas. These accommodations are categorized into luxury, mid-range, and budget.

  • Southern Bwindi accommodations: Clouds Lodge, Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge, Nshongi Camp, Bwindi Backpacker's Campsite, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, Rushaga Gorilla Safari Lodge.

When you spend the night far from the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you may be required to drive in the dark to catch up with briefings in the southern area. This is a challenging attempt because you may encounter obstacles like slippery roads, poor visibility, and so much more.

Accommodations to book for chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale National Park range from up-scale, Mid-range, and budget.

  • Kibale accommodations: Primates Lodge, Ndali Lodge, Kibale Safaris Lodge, Chimpanzees Guest House, Kyaninga Lodge, Chimps Nest, C.V.K and others

Identify Transport Means to the Gorilla and Chimpanzee Habituation Experience destinations.

Road Transport

The most common means of travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Kibale National Park is by road. We recommend a 4x4 wheel drive vehicle in good condition because the roads get messy in the countryside.

An experienced and professional driver guide is an added advantage if you want the best memories of the gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience safari.

The drive from Kampala or Entebbe to the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is about 540 kilometers and takes about 8 to 9 hours.

Driving from Entebbe or Kampala to Kibale National Park is about 336 kilometers, passing via Mbarara and Kamwenge.

Air transport

Daily domestic flights are available from Entebbe or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro Airstrip, and then a transfer vehicle is hired to the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. From the Kisoro airstrip, the drive to south Bwindi is about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

From Entebbe airport or Kajjansi Air flight, flights head to Kasese Airstrip, where you can connect to Kibale National Park with a later transfer vehicle.

Charter flight services from Kajjansi Airstrip or Entebbe Airport are available, too. You land at Kisoro airstrip for gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Kasese airstrip for chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale National Park.

Consider the Age Of Gorilla And Chimpanzee Habituation Experience Participants

The age limit for doing gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience is 15 years and over. Initially, the age limit for gorilla habituation experience was 15 years and above, but to give more children a chance to see the mountain gorillas, the Uganda Wildlife Authority lowered the age limit to 15 years and over.

The mountain gorillas and chimpanzees look frightening, which may scare children below 15 years. Doing gorilla and chimpanzee habituation safari involves walking for some time before finding the mountain gorillas; children below 15 years may not endure that time. Rules of gorilla and chimpanzee safaris must be religiously followed, which may be challenging for children below 15 years.

The terrain of Bwindi forest may not favor children below 15 years since you may be required to hike, yet chances of children not being fit are high. It would help if you bared some fitness level for gorilla or chimpanzee habituation experience.

Do Exercises before the gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience

Keeping your body fit for the gorilla and chimpanzee habituation safari is essential. You do not have to keep in the gym all the time but can start with simple exercises to stretch your muscles a little more than usual.

The hike to locate the mountain gorillas is quite tiresome because of the nature of the terrain of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Sometimes, the mountain gorillas spend part of their day on the slopes of the plateaus and ridges, which necessitates you to hike.

This is when you have to test your level of fitness. Although the porter may push you when tired, you have to walk there by yourself at some point. Having some level of fitness is very important.

Chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale National Park may not be in a rugged area, but you need to be physically fit. Walking in the Kibale forest requires being fit, as you may take some time before finding the chimpanzees. Chimpanzees are mobile primates. Although habituated, they roam the forest searching for food and other forest supplies.

Pack The Right Gorilla And Chimpanzee Habituation Gears

When shopping and packing for gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience, follow the list of primate safari gear. Walking in the jungle in suitable attire, like safari boots, hats, garden gloves, insect repellants, long-sleeved shirts and trousers, and so much more, is very important.

The environment in the jungle is rough, and chances of getting into contact with stinging nettles are high. It would help to pack the right gorilla and chimpanzee habituation safari gear in wilderness-friendly colors, like tan and Khaki.

Packing with what is relevant for your safari is entirely optional.

Number of days on gorilla and chimpanzee habituation safari

Three days are the least number of days you can be on a gorilla and chimpanzee habituation safari. Chimpanzee habituation experience also needs a minimum of three days. This is because the time you may take transferring from one destination to another may be extended, yet you must also walk in the wilderness.

At Encounter Africa Safaris, our tour consultants are always ready to work with you to draw the best flow of your safari itinerary that fits your holiday time limit. You need a well-tailored itinerary even when you have to add other activities to combine with the gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience. Contact us with your preferences, and we will give you advice and work with you to make your Uganda primate safari dream come true and memorable.

Choose additional activities to combine with the gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience.

You may add more Uganda safari activities while drawing the plan for the gorilla and chimpanzee habituation experience. Uganda is a country gifted by nature, so while on the ground, you may wish to do more, but selecting these additional activities in advance may save you.

Some of the other Uganda safari activities include game drives and a launch trip in Queen Elizabeth National Park, a detour to Lake Mburo National Park for game drives and boat rides, birding in Bwindi and Kibale forest, visit to the source of River Nile in Jinja, white water rafting on River Nile and others.

Although extra days may be required for other Uganda safari activities, this is worth your time as it is a once-in-a-lifetime African safari experience.

What should you pack for the gorilla and chimpanzee habitat safari?

  • Safari trekking boots will withstand the soggy ground, especially when there is intense rainfall, yet the ground has volcanic soils that get boggy.
  • Safari Long-sleeved shirt and trousers in colors friendly to the wilderness. The camouflaged clothes are not allowed in Uganda for security reasons. You must carry clothes that protect your body from pricking surfaces and biting nettles.
  • A camera that does produce flash lighting during photography. Carry one with a great lens that can catch a good photo amidst dripping water from the tree and surfaces of leaves.
  • A pair of garden gloves to grip the creepers you pass by tightly.
  • An extra fully charged battery to exchange with when one runs low.
  • A shawl or sweater to keep you warm because this area is generally cold throughout the day and night
  • Energy snacks to feed on when you get hungry in the forest. Trekking sometimes gets challenging and tiresome, so you need some energizers.
  • A torch for extra light during the night when lights go out.
  • A waterproof backpack carries your belongings to keep them from getting scattered in the forest in case you fall while trekking in the wilderness.
  • Some cash to change into local currency in case you wish to do any transactions while on the ground, like buying souvenirs. In Africa, credit cards are rarely used as a means of transaction because the procedure of collecting money from them is lengthy.
  • Toiletries, just in case your lodge doesn't provide
  • Travel adapter and charger in case your electronic gadgets need to be recharged
  • Warm flip-flops are to use while in the room because the floors get cold in most rooms, yet the slippers available may be cold, too.
  • Pajamas to wear at night and keep warm because this area gets cold at night
  • A cap or large brim hat to cover your hair from dripping water from the tree branches and leaves. Even stinging flying insects in the forest may fall on your hair.
  • A pair of stockings to tack in your trousers and offer protection during the walk
  • Another pair of batteries to exchange with in case some run low in power.
  • Insect repellant is friendly to your skin to protect your skin from stinging insects in the wilderness.
  • Sunscreen Because Africa is a tropical continent, you need to protect your skin from sun rays that may affect your skin.
  • A water bottle to carry drinking water to quench thirst while you trek to locate the mountain gorillas.
  • Sunglasses protect your eyes from buzzing insects in the wilderness.
  •  Binoculars to see far-ranging features that are existing in the wilderness
  •  A notebook or journal to put down your moments with the mountain gorillas
  • Duffel bag to carry in your belongings when traveling for gorilla habituation.
  • Bug spray in case your room has these bugs

Our tour consultants are always ready to work with you to draw the best flow of your safari. Contact us for more information.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Best trip ever Best tour of my life!!! Very organized and my transportation Godwin was amazing. I learned so much about Rwanda and Uganda before the trip even started. When we did the hike, I felt very safe due to the guides and rangers and they were all very knowledgeable. Worth every penny

An unforgettable immersion in the heart of Ugandan nature 🌿 An unforgettable stay in Uganda! The observation of gorillas and chimpanzees will remain in my memory. The Jeep rhino tour with a private guide was amazing. Everything was perfectly organized, respectful of nature and animals. A magical experience that I recommend 100%!A thought also for our guide Patrick who was simply perfect
