On the day of gorilla trekking
Tourists come from different countries to trek gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda. You will find people coming from as far as America, Russia, Britian, Australia and Europe to Uganda to enjoy one of the world’s sought after tourist activity. One has to part with Six hundred Dollars or Seven fifty dollars to obtain a gorilla permit in Uganda or Rwanda. This permit then allows you to spend one hour with the gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga National park or Volcanoes National Park. This cost of course excludes your international flights to Uganda depending on which country you will be flying from. It also excludes your accommodation while in Uganda, ground transport which should be a four wheel drive due to the nature of the roads or internal flights to Bwindi Impenetrable National park if you prefer to save time other than driving for eight to nine hours by road.
So you are finally in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Volcanoes National Park at one of the lodges ready to trek gorillas the next day. We expect that your consultant if you booked through an local tour operator in Uganda or Rwanda would have advised you on what to pack for your days gorilla trek.
Make sure that you arrive early at the lodge so that you get enough time to relax as you prepare for your trek the next day. This relaxation is very important as you will get peace of mind. Prepare your trekking gear well in advance. Make sure that your hiking boots, gloves, rain jackets, insect repellents are all ready so that you do not panic in the morning. Do not ignore any of the items as each is very important.
You should have in mind what you are interested in. Some tourists are interested in different gorilla families due to different reasons. You knowing what you want will help Uganda Wildlife Authority Guides to allocate you to the a habituated gorilla family that will suite your interests. You may be for example be interested in a gorilla family with many kids, a family that is closer, a family that is friendly and easy to photograph and many other features. Knowing this will then help you to request this in order to achieve the best out of your trek. Remember you have only one hour with the gorillas so you have to make the best out of that hour.
Its imperative that you wakeup early and go to the restaurant, enjoy your breakfast and make sure that you have all your gadgets that you need. Get your packed lunch as well as enough drinking water and if possible, have some energy giving food. Once you are ready, please join others at the park head quarters for the general gorilla tracking briefing where you will get a chance to request a gorilla family that you are interested in.
If you are not feeling fit for the trek, you are advised to go with a porter/helper who will then help to carry your gadgets, give you a push or a pull to make sure that you achieve your dream of seeing one of the habituated gorilla families in Uganda and Rwanda.
