New gorilla families in Bwindi-Christmas and Katwe groups

Uganda wildlife Authority announced and inaugurated new gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park that have been habituated and ready for trekking or to be visited by tourists. In their official communication, Uganda wildlife Authority informed all tour operators that new gorilla families have been opened up in Nkuringo and Buhoma regions. Christmas gorilla group has been officially opened up for visiting in Nkuringo region of southern Bwindi. Christmas gorilla family brings to the number of gorilla groups in Nkuringo to three.

Gorilla groups in Nkuringo include the original group called Nkuringo, Bushawo group and Christmas. With these three gorilla group in the region, many tourists and tour operators can now book up to 24 gorilla permits per day instead of8 permits that were being booked when we only had one gorilla group in the names of Nkuringo group.

The new gorilla group in Nkuringo know as Christmas gorilla family is headed by the dorminant silverback known as Christmas. According Uganda Wildlife Authority, Christmas gorilla family has 9 members with 6 members normally seen do to their love for visitors. One black back, three females and one baby have been sighted. New gorilla family in Buhoma, Katwe gorilla group

Another new gorilla family introduced and opened for trekking is Katwe gorilla group located in Buhoma. Buhoma region is located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which has other three gorilla families. With Katwe gorilla group opened, four gorilla families including Mubare group (The first gorilla family to be habituated and opened for visiting in 1993), Rushegura group and Habinyanja. This therefore means that the new gorilla family in the names of Katwe gorilla group has increased the number of gorilla permits booked and reserved per day from 24 to 32 permits.

Katwe gorilla family located in Buhoma region in the northern part of Bwindi has one dominant silverback, two babies and four adult females. Encounter Africa safaris will bring you more details on Katwe gorilla group at a later stage.

For those interested in trekking new gorilla families in Bwindi should book gorilla permits in Nkuringo and Buhoma. That means booking gorilla families in the southern part of Bwindi and Northern part of Bwindi. Once this is done, you will need to ask Uganda wildlife Authority officials on the day of trekking informing them of your interest to trek Christmas gorilla family (in Nkuringo) or Katwe gorilla group (In Buhoma). This is because gorilla family allocation is done on the day of trekking and each individual tourist requests for a gorilla family depending on his/her interest and physical fitness.
