Mgahinga NP reduced or discounted gorilla permits in June 2015
In 2015, Uganda wildlife Authority discounted the gorilla trekking permits for Mgahinga National Park for months of April, May and November. By then the cost for the gorilla trekking permits was $600 but discounted to about $350 per person. This campaign was done to invite the world into those inner secrets of Mgahinga National park and marketing its untouched beauties.
As per today, the cost is $700 but the gorilla permits for Mgahinga National Park are no more discounted. The funds collected from selling the gorilla trekking permits are used for park maintenance, paying the ranger guides, gorilla treatment, annual profit from all the park activities is shared 20% with the local community.

Mgahinga national park is one of the smallest National parks in Uganda occupying an area is approximately 33.7 square km. this mountainous park is shielded by three distinctive volcanoes that is Mountain Muhavura, Mountain Gahinga and Mountain Sabyinyo.
The Mgahinga National Park has its headquarters in Ntebeko visitor center ant the main activities in this park are gorilla trekking, golden monkeys trekking, birding and day’s hiking.
More wild animals have been recorded to live in the park that is about 39 mammals, over 115 bird species, forest elephants, buffaloes, bush pigs and others. Others primates that are residents of the park include black and white colobus, vervet monkeys, grey cheeked mangabey, red tailed monkeys, olive baboons and others.
What To Do In Mgahinga National park
Gorilla trekking
Mgahinga national park is one of the world’s only homes of the mountain gorillas. At the moment, only one gorilla family in this park has been opened for tourists viewing. The family is called Nyakagezi gorilla family. In the past, it was known for being mobile as it would wonder into Virunga national park and Volcanoes National Park.
Now, this family has been steadily seen in Mgahinga national park for many years. Mountain gorillas live freely in the world and do not know the beginning and end of the political boundaries.
One need a gorilla trekking permit for Mgahinga national park to be allowed to be in the company of the mountain gorillas.
You must have your overnight in accommodations located close to the National Parks like Gahinga Volcanoes Lodge. More accommodation facilities exist in Kisoro.
On the day of gorilla trekking, you must attend briefing at Ntebeko visitor center and your ranger guide escorts the entire party in to Mgahinga forest to start searching. This is one of the still virgin gorilla trekking parks because it has received fewer visitors and its vegetation is still intact.
Golden Monkey trekking
Mgahinga National Park is one of the few homes of the golden monkeys. They are a special monkey specie with golden brown hairs and larger body structure compared to normal monkeys. They are charming and restless in the forest. When you spot them, they keep you on your toes as they hope from one tree to another.
Birding in Mgahinga National park
Keen birders have chance of spotting rare bird species in Mgahinga National Park. The park has some of the rarest bird species like Rwenzori Turaco, Ladgen’s bush-shrike, scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird, Montane Nightjar, Kivu Ground Thrush, White-tailed Blue fly catcher, Alpine Chat and others.

Batwa Trail and Garama Cave
Visit the historical Garama cave a walk guided by a Mutwa. This cave runs for 342 km below the plateau, close to the edge of the park about 3 km from Ntebeko. This historic cave lay in the deeper ends of the park in the past and was the retreat point for Batwa after raiding the Bafumbira farmers. This was the council chamber too.
Apparently, this cave provides an atmospheric setting for a performance of Batwa music and drama at the end of the Batwa trail.
Hiking on Mgahinga Mountains
Three mountains makes up the Gahinga ranges that is Sabyinyo Mountain, Gahinga Mountain and Muhavura Mountain. In a day’s hike, you can make a return trip on either of these mountains and enjoy spectaculars views of this park from an elevated point.
Mountain Sabyinyo, which locally means old man’s tooth, is 3669 meters high. Hiking it takes you to 3 peaks. The first one leads to the second one which is a long narrow ridge that overlooks impressive drops into the gorge on either sides. To get to peak three, you pass through steep and muddy scramble.
While at its top, you can enjoy a 360 view of the border of Uganda, Rwanda and D.R.Congo from the same point.
Hiking Mountain Gahinga takes you through bamboo forest to reach the lush green swamp in the crater at the summit. This round trip may take close to 6 hours. Locally, the word Gahinga means small piles of rock. These resulted from volcanic rocks that scattered in farmland that used to tide the area.
Muhavura mountain hike is spectacular taking you to the small Crater Lake at the top. As you climb, look out for stunning alpine vegetation, superb panoramas. Pass through the Muhavura trail that provides the quickest and shortest ascent route to experience these dramatic plants as the view includes more Virunga volcanoes, the rift valley, Lake Edward and Rwenzori mountains. Locally Muhavura means the guide and this resulted from its distinctive location.
