May 23, 2024
Kibale chimpanzee habituation experience permits increased to $300 from $250 for foreign non-residents. Chimpanzee habituation refers to the process where researchers train chimpanzees to get used to the presence of humans. It can take 2 to 3 years to be complete, depending on the chimpanzee community being habituated. The Uganda Wildlife Authority came up with new permit tariffs, introduced in January 2024, and all stakeholders were informed about the necessary changes.

The chimpanzee habituation permit for foreign non-residents has been increased from $250 to $300 per person, and the increase is to help in the proper conservation of the chimpanzees, fund the different programs set up for the communities, and improve the services provided to the tourists upon their visit to Kibale National Park. The changes that were made to the chimpanzee habituation habit start working from 1st July 2024 to 30th June 2026, and in case of any other changes, all stakeholders will be informed in advance.
Kibale National Park is home to over 1500 chimpanzees. It is also home to 13 primate species, including L'Hoest monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked Mangabeys, black and white colobus monkeys, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, and blue monkeys, among others. Kibale National Park is the best destination for chimpanzee trekking and watching other primates in Uganda. One of the most frequently asked questions about chimpanzee habituation in Kibale is whether it is possible to spot the primates throughout the year, and the answer is yes. You have a 99% chance of spotting the chimpanzees on your visit to the national park any time of the year.
Chimpanzee habituation permits in Kibale are best booked and purchased through a trusted tour operator like Encounter Safaris. Contact us with the dates you wish to trek the chimpanzees, the month, and the year. After receiving your request, we check for the availability of the permits on your preferred dates, and if they are available, you will be sent an invoice to pay for the permit because no purchase will be made without payment. In cases where the permits are unavailable on your dates, you will be given a list of available dates. After we have confirmed payment, we will proceed to purchase the permit on your behalf, scan it, and send it as the receipt of confirmation.
Before the permit is purchased, you must provide a copy of your passport to confirm if you are above 12 years old, your name, and how many permits you purchase. Make sure that all the information is correct because that is what will appear on your permit, and it should match the details on your passport.
The habituation permit in Kibale National Park must be booked at least six months before the trek date because the permits are usually sold out during the peak season, and early booking ensures proper planning of the entire safari.
The permit includes spending time with the chimpanzees and observing them, an English-speaking driver guide, armed rangers, and park entrance fees. It does not include transport, personal purchases, accommodation, meals, and other safari activities.
Cancellation of the chimpanzee habituation permit is possible, but only if you have valid reasons as proof of why you are canceling the permit. Some of the reasons that can lead to the cancellation of the habituation permit include falling sick, losing a loved one, or missing a flight due to bad weather or other mechanical conditions. Cancellation of the permit comes with refunds, but after a long process, which includes you writing a formal letter to the Uganda Wildlife Authority requesting a reschedule and attaching all the necessary documents as proof of why the reschedule is needed. After deliberation from UWA, you will be granted the reschedule, but after some serious consideration. The rescheduling must be done at least seven days before the trek date, and UWA allows two free reschedules. If you want to do a third one, a surcharge of 25% is added to the original permit cost.
If you fall sick and the warden confirms that you are ill on the morning of the chimp habituation process, you will get a refund of 50% on the permit because you will not be allowed to trek in a bid to protect the chimpanzees.
In cases where you reschedule after paying the initial deposit of 30%, full payment will be needed when you make the 2nd reschedule.
When you don't see the chimpanzees during the habituation process, UWA refunds 50% of the permit cost; however, this is rare and has to be confirmed by the warden.
For a permit to be canceled, you need to boo with 30% of the total Chimp permit cost and after paying 70% 90 days before the trek date; otherwise, the permit will be canceled.
Below is the refund cancellation policy from UWA if you have paid the full permit cost.
91 days and above before the trek date 75%
46-90 days before the trek date 50%
9-45 days before the trek date 25%
0-8 days before the trek date Zero/no refund.
The chimpanzee habituation process is training wild chimpanzees to get used to the presence of humans tracking through the forest. The chimpanzee habituation process takes about 2 to 3 years before the habituated communities are opened to the public for tracking, and this is carried out by professional researchers.
Chimpanzee habituation starts early morning with a briefing about the rules and regulations that need to be followed and the expectations. The briefing is done at the park headquarters (Kanyachu). After the briefing, the trek starts with the guidance of an experienced guide and park rangers as you search for the chimpanzees. You get the chance to carefully monitor the chimpanzees on a one on one basis, ask all the questions that you have about the chimpanzees, learn about their behavioral patterns like how they groom their young ones, hunt for food, make their nests, and learn about their hierarchy while in the community.
The chimpanzee habituation process allows you to get close to the chimpanzees by spending almost the entire day with them, observing and monitoring their behaviors, watching them leave their nests as they participate in various activities like hunting and searching for food, feeding, grooming the young ones, fighting, constructing nests for the night, and breastfeeding. You can take photos and record videos as the chimpanzees go about their daily routines.
Chimpanzee habituation and chimpanzee tracking are carried out in Kibale National Park, and both offer an unforgettable experience for tourists. Chimpanzee habituation is more expensive than chimpanzee tracking, with a permit for habituation at $300 for foreign non-residents and a chimpanzee tracking permit at $250 for foreign non-residents. You also get to spend more time with the chimps during the habituation process and only an hour with the chimpanzees during chimpanzee tracking. Both chimpanzee habituation and chimpanzee tracking give you a chance to spend time with the chimpanzees, taking photos and recording videos, observing their behavioral patterns, and asking questions from the researchers about the chimps.
When you purchase a chimpanzee gorilla habituation permit, note that this cannot be exchanged with the chimpanzee tracking permit at all costs.
Chimp habituation has rules and regulations that all tourists have to follow to be able to conserve the chimpanzees, and these include:
The correct packing list for a chimpanzee habituation permit that we recommend for the habituation process in Kibale National Park includes a camera and all camera equipment, binoculars, strong hike boots, neutral-colored clothes, long-sleeved shirts, lightweight trousers, insect repellent, sunscreen, a day backpack, rain jacket, flashlight and extra batteries, sweater, thick socks, garden gloves, adjustable gaiters, snacks, foldable water bottle, toiletries and first aid kit among others. When packing for a safari to Kibale, ensure that all the documents that you have are legal, and do not pack a lot of things because they might weigh you down during the trek. Remember to carry some cash with you for personal shopping and tipping.
Yes, getting last-minute chimpanzee habituation permits is possible, but it is best to book in advance to avoid last-minute disappointments. Although chimpanzee habituation permits are not in high demand like the gorilla permits, for better planning, make sure that you book in advance six months before the trek date to ensure that you get your desired dates. Note that there are only four habituated chimpanzee permits printed per day.
Accommodation is important when planning a habituation exercise in Kibale National Park. It must be booked immediately after purchasing the chimp permit because they are also in high demand, especially during the dry/peak season. Kibale National Park has accommodation including budget, mid-range, and accommodation facilities, some of which include Kyaninga Lodge, Fort Motel, Mountains of the Moon Hotel, chimpanzee Forest Lodge, primate Lodge, Isunga Lodge, Kibale River Camp, Kibale Guest Cottages, Papaya lake lodge, Turaco treetops, Kibale Forest camp, Primate Lodge, Rwetera safari park, Nyaika Hotel and Chimpundu Lodge among others.

Chimpanzee habituation can be carried out at any time of the year; however, the best time is during the wet/rainy season in the months of March to May and October to November because during this time, there is plenty of food for the chimpanzees, and they can easily be located as compared to the dry season where chimpanzees can be seen moving deep into the forest as they search for food.
Chimpanzee habituation in Kibale National Park can also be carried out during the dry months of June to September and December to February because the trek routes are easy to use during this period, making it possible and easy to track the chimpanzees for habituation.
You can get to Kibale National Park by either using road or air transport. Kibale can easily be accessed by booking domestic flights from Kajjansi Airstrip or Entebbe International Airport to Kasese or Semuliki Airstrip, and you drive from the airstrips for two hours to get to the park headquarters. The flight needs to be booked at least three days before the trek date, and it can only be done using domestic flights like Airlink.
Driving from Kampala to Kibale National Park is the most commonly used mode of transport, and it is carried out using 4x4 well-maintained safari vehicles. The drive from Kampala to Kibale takes about 6 to 7 hours. You can, however, connect to Kibale National Park via Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the drive takes 2 to 3 hours.
