Budongo forest is a natural forest and hosts another forest dweller that may not be habituated to be in the presence of humans. While walking to find the chimpanzees without ranger guides, you may encounter animals like giant forest hogs, forest elephants, wild pigs, and others. These wild animals may hurt you if you have no weapons to defend yourself.
The trails leading to where the chimpanzees are expected to go during chimpanzee trekking may be confusing to you as a tourist, and only ranger guides who often walk in the forest know the proper directions to take. As a self-guided tourist in Budongo forest, you may need help in this dense jungle with less internet connection and poor network.
Budongo forest neighbors Murchison Falls National Park to the north, and it is best to do a combo of chimpanzee trekking and a safari to Murchison Falls National Park to have the best experience on your Uganda safari.
Bundongo forest, which covers about 432 square kilometers of land, lies on the topmost part of the Albertine rift valley. It is one of Uganda's natural forests, hosting many fauna and flora.
Chimpanzees are some of the few occupants of this forest.
The land of Budongo forest slopes from southeast to northwest. Budongo forest is a water catchment area for the surrounding areas, but it has four principal rivers: River Kamirambwa, River Waisoke, River Siba, and River Sonso.
Budongo forest is open for chimpanzee trekking any season of the year; however, the dry period is more interesting. This being a tropical rainforest rain, two seasons happen: the dry and wet seasons. The dry season expected from June to September and December to February creates a favorable environment for several primates in the jungle to move freely in the wild. Temperate Budongo forest may rise to about 32 degrees centigrade during the dry season.
During the dry season, the trails in Budongo forest have lower undergrowth protruding through to cover the trails. Chimpanzees are more accessible to spot feeding closer to the ground. Despite the dense canopy of the Budongo forest, more sunlight is let into the ground, reducing its succulence.
Other Budongo forest inhabitants can be seen wandering in the forest during the dry season as they search for what to eat. The temperature in the dry season tends to get high, reducing food sources since most chimpanzee meals are composed of foliage. The peak season chances of not finding chimpanzee permit availability are high during the dry season when many tourists book these permits, yet their supply is limited too.
Most of the rains of the Budongo forest fall from March to May and September to November, but you can still do chimpanzee trekking in the wet season. The average annual rainfall is between 1200 mm and 2200mm, with temperatures sometimes dropping to about 19 degrees centigrade. When doing chimpanzee trekking in the Budongo forest during these months, you need to wear the right chimpanzee trekking gear.
Budongo forest chimpanzees living in Kaniyo Pabidi are open to tourists for chimpanzee trekking, but be sure to see them. Their chimpanzees are first habituated to human presence from their timid, wild behaviors.
A team of ranger guides follows the chimpanzee community to establish where they might have nested and determine their possible hangout point for the day. The ranger guides lead tourists to follow the trail to where the chimpanzees were last seen the previous day but also use clues from early risers.
Finding the chimpanzees in Budongo forest also depends on the tourist's participation, which helps trace them using clues like footprints and freshly chewed foliage. Listen to their calls as they try to communicate with each other.
Chimpanzee trekking may take about 30 minutes or more, depending on where these primates spend their time. Chimpanzees split into smaller groups to feed each day, so locating them depends on where their feeding or napping point is.
Sometimes, finding chimpanzees in Budongo forest depends on the weather conditions of the day, the death of a member, the case of a tough fight, and much more. Follow the rules of chimpanzee trekking given by the ranger guides during briefing so that you can have that precious moment with the chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees are susceptible primates, especially with intruders in their vicinity.
Upon finding the chimpanzees, only one hour is allowed with them. This time is minimized to reduce the effects of overstaying with these primates. The presence of chimpanzees disrupts the daily life of the chimpanzees, so it should be minimized.
Tourists traveling for research purposes in the Budongo forest must contact the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology. You need verification from the National Forestry Authority and Uganda Wildlife Authority.

During the wet season, chances of finding the chimpanzees up in the trees are high, which may not be convenient for children below 12 years.
Locating chimpanzees in the Budongo forest depends on factors prevailing in the forest. Sometimes, the chimpanzees feed from a far area while they may be closer to the starting point of the trek another day.
Open your mind to seeing other forest dwellers instead of focusing on just finding the chimpanzees only. Budongo forest is home to other primates like olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabey, and vervet monkeys.
Keen birders can see several bird species, including some Albertine rift endemics. At times, animals stray from Murchison Falls National Park into Budongo forest.
Finally, when you locate the chimpanzees, you are allowed only one hour with them.
Budongo forest is under the National Forestry Authority's care, and this body's ranger guides are on the ground to protect the forest, its inhabitants, and tourists. They work closely with Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides to ensure the wild animals are safe.
On the ground are other Uganda security agencies to keep Law and order.
As an individual on a chimpanzee trekking safari, you are requested not to walk into Budongo forest without an escorting ranger guide. The forest is vast, and chances of getting lost during a self-guided chimpanzee safari adventure are high.
Wear the right chimpanzee trekking gear to protect yourself from the harsh conditions in the jungle.

Chimpanzees in the Budongo forest are not dangerous but do not provoke them either. These chimpanzees were first habituated to human presence. Chimpanzee habituation is a process by which a wild chimpanzee community is helped to get used to human presence without altering their nature.
The process of chimpanzee habituation takes an unknown amount of time, but it will take until the chimpanzees are ready for public visits.
When you locate the chimpanzees, try not to mimic them, as you may not know what you are communicating. Keep your belongings closer, as sometimes these primates are curious.
When angry, the chimpanzees may charge by pulling grass around them, throwing fruits, beating the tree trunks, hooting, and much more drama. Do not panic when you observe this, but stay calm and wait for the ranger guide to establish the root cause of the matter. Panicking and running may escalate the situation, causing a stampede.
Chimpanzee trekking gets you closer to some of the most endangered primates in the world. Chimpanzees are charming to accompany because of their close resemblance to humans. Chimpanzees have about 98% human DNA. Watching the chimpanzees care for their infants as a motherly instinct is heartmelting.
As a primatologist on a chimpanzee safari in Budongo forest, you contribute to the information about the life of the chimpanzees. Many tourists who visit get to know more about the relevancy of these primates in the world from what you contribute.
A part of the funds collected from the sale of chimpanzee permits is used for chimpanzee conservation. More funds are still needed to support the sustainable existence of the chimpanzees in the wild.
You support the local community when you hire a porter to carry your chimpanzee trekking gear. More sensitization about the importance of chimpanzees and their habitats in the areas where they are is still needed. The money collected from being porters to tourists during chimpanzee trekking in Budongo forest is used to run the daily life of local people.
