When Can I Book Chimpanzee Habituation Experience?
The Chimpanzee habituation safari is open all year. However, most tourists prefer the dry season, usually June, July, August, September, December, and January. This is because the forest is believed to receive less humid conditions then.

How Long Is Chimpanzee Habituation Experience In Uganda?

How Safe Is Chimpanzee Habituation Experience?

On the day of chimpanzee habituation, you have to attend the ranger guides’ briefing at the Kanyanchu visitor center for Kibale National Park as a must. You are taken through the guidelines of chimpanzee habituation and some of the traits you may expect during this adventure.
When doing chimpanzee habituation, stay close to the team with which you are carrying out this adventure because you may be lost in the wilderness. The ranger guide follows the pace of the slowest tourist; however, the rest is still the same.
While standing before the chimpanzees, do not provoke or mimic them because you do not know what you are communicating.
The park security collaborates with other Uganda security agencies to keep law and order.
You need to pay attention to personal security by not eating street food that can cause stomach disorders. No one with a communicable infection like dysentery is allowed to do chimpanzee habituation experience. This is because chimpanzees are highly susceptible to human infections as they are the closest human relatives to wild animals.
Only enter the forest with an escorting ranger guide because the forest has other dwellers that are not habituated to human presence, like forest elephants, giant forest hogs, and others.
What Is The Difference Between Chimpanzee Trekking And Chimpanzee Habituation Experience?
Chimpanzee trekking is an activity where you follow a fully habituated chimpanzee troop and stay with them for one hour, while chimpanzee habituation experience is an adventure where you follow a semi-habituated chimpanzee troop and stay with them for four hours.
A chimpanzee habituation experience permit for Kibale National Park is $250 per person per trek, while a chimpanzee trekking permit for Kibale National Park is $200 per person per trek.
When doing chimpanzee trekking, a maximum of 6 tourists are allowed per troop, while for chimpanzee habituation experience maximum of 4 tourists are allowed.
The time of starting the chimpanzee habituation experience is earlier for the morning session, which is between 0530 and 0630, which may give you a chance to witness the chimpanzees as they de-nest. Chimpanzee trekking typically starts at 0800 hours for the morning session.

Can I Purchase The Chimpanzee Habituation Permit For Uganda In Instalment?
Uganda Wildlife Authority accepts installment chimpanzee habituation permit purchases OF 30% and 70%. This only applies to those purchasing their chimpanzee permits 90 days before the habituation date, and remember to top up 90 days before the habituation date.
In case you fail or forget to top up your chimpanzee permit, you are given a penalty.
It is best to purchase your chimpanzee habituation experience permit in full to prevent chances of forgetting to top up.
Is Chimpanzee Permit Reschedule Allowed In Uganda?
You can reschedule your chimpanzee habituation experience permit if you follow the procedure below.
Note: If your chimpanzee permit is purchased in installments, you must top it up before rescheduling it.
Write to Uganda Wildlife Authority requesting to reschedule your chimpanzee habituation permit. Include the date to which you wish to move your chimpanzee permit. Attach evidence why to support your request in case you have any.
Once approved, your chimpanzee habituation permit is moved depending on prevailing availability.
Uganda Wildlife Authority allows you two free chimpanzees to reschedule for the same permit.
If you wish to reschedule the third time, you need approval from Uganda Wildlife Authority executive director. A surcharge of 25% is added.
What Is The Age Limit For Chimpanzee Habituation Experience?
Persons above 12 years are the only ones allowed to do chimpanzee habituation. This is because the time you spend in the forest searching to locate the chimpanzees may be longer to be sustained by a child below this age.
When searching for chimpanzees, you are required to keep your voice low; however, for a child below this age, it may be quite hard to withstand because of the provocative nature of the chimpanzees at times.
At a glance, the chimpanzees may be scared of a child below this age, yet you are not supposed to show signs of being frightened as this makes you look suspicious before the chimpanzees, which may push them into hiding.
What Are The Guidelines For Chimpanzee Habituation Experience In Uganda?
- Keep a distance of about 8 meters from the chimpanzees when you locate them. They are wild animals that may pass an infection to you or you to them. This is one of the possible precautions you can take.
- Volunteer to stay behind if you catch a communicable infection like Corona Virus, Flu, cholera, etc. These animals are susceptible to this infection because they have a DNA of about 96% to that of humans.
- Never eat or smoke before the chimpanzees because they may be enticed to grab it from you. Please do not feed the chimpanzees, as they are naturally supposed to look for their food, not depend on human support. If you wish to eat, do it about 200 meters from them.
- Children 12 and below are not allowed to do chimpanzee habituation experience because they may not withstand the conditions in the wilderness or sustain their stay in the forest as the time of locating the chimpanzees is still being determined.
- Only enter the forest with a park ranger because other forest dwellers may harm you or get lost.
- If you wish to take a long call, ask the ranger guide to dig a hole at least 30 cm deep and cover waste beyond recognition.
- Making noise in the wilderness while searching for chimpanzees is forbidden. They are highly sensitive primates scared of unfamiliar noise in their habitats.
- Never use flash photography for chimpanzee trekking, as it may scare these great apes. Chimpanzees are often scared of unfamiliar occurrences in their vicinity. This may push the chimpanzee into the deeper ends of this tropical rainforest.
- Provoking the chimpanzees is forbidden because they may turn violent, although it has never happened in Uganda’s history of chimpanzee trekking. It is also possible. Mimicking the chimpanzees is forbidden because you may communicate something odd. These primates are very sensitive, especially to what intruders do while with them.
- Only one hour is allowed with the chimpanzees when you locate them.
