Gorilla trekking safari in Uganda is considered safe, with rigorous safety measures in place to protect both the visitors and the endangered mountain gorillas. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the park rangers ensure that the trekkers maintain a safe distance from the gorillas, and the guides are trained to respond to any unexpected behavior. Before starting the trek, the guides brief the trekkers on the safety guidelines and protocols. These periods offer the best conditions for gorilla trekking, with minimal rain and mud, allowing for clearer views and better photography opportunities.
Additionally the dry seasons coincide with the gorillas’ food scarcity, making them more sedentary and easier to track, increasing the chances of a successful and memorable encounter. Also gorilla trekking safari is possible as well during the wet season or rainy season in March to May and September to November. The dry seasons offer the most favorable conditions for an unforgettable gorilla trekking safari experience.
Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda refer to the official licenses or authorization documents issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) that allows the visitors to participate in the guided treks to track and observe the mountain gorillas in their natural habitats within Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park. These permits are required for all trekkers and serve as the control measure to manage the number of visitors, minimize the impact on the gorillas and their habitats, and generate revenue for the conservation efforts. Essentially the permit grants permission to trek and observe the gorillas for a specific date and group, ensuring a safe and responsible experience for both the mountain gorillas and the trekkers.

The permits cost 800 USD per person for the non-foreign residents, 700 USD per person for non-residents and 300,000 UGX per person for East African citizens. The permit fee includes guided trek, park entrance fees, and conservation fees but excludes other expenses like accommodation, transport, meals and others. Only eight people are allowed to trek each gorilla group per day, making permits limited and often booked well in advance, especially during the peak or dry season. Proceeds from permit sales fund conservation efforts, supporting the protection of these endangered creatures and their habitats.

In Uganda, the recommended age for a gorilla trekking safari is 15 years and above, as set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This age restriction is in place to ensure that the trekkers are physically and mentally capable of handling the demands of the trek, which can be strenuous and unpredictable. Children under 15 years old may not have the necessary stamina or understanding to follow safety guidelines, and their presence may also disrupt the behavior of the gorillas. Additionally, the trekking experience may be too intense for younger children, making 15 years the minimum age for safe and enjoyable gorilla trekking experience.
Individuals of 15 years and above are recommended for gorilla trekking safari because, at this age, they are considered physically mature enough to handle the demands of the trek, which includes hiking for several hours in challenging terrain, following strict safety guidelines and maintaining a safe distance from the gorillas. Additionally, the 15-year-olds are less likely to contract diseases that can be transmitted to the gorillas, such as influenza and tuberculosis, and are also better able to understand and follow instructions from the guides, reducing the risk of disrupting the gorillas’ behavior or habitat.
Gorilla trekking safari in Uganda is considered as a safe and well-managed safari activity, with the minimal risk of harm to trekkers or gorillas. The Uganda Wildlife Authority and local tour operators take numerous precautions, including guided treks, strict safety protocols, and habituation of the gorilla groups, to ensure a secure and enjoyable safari experience. While these are inherent risks associated with trekking in a wilderness area, such as inclement weather and difficult terrain, the chances of encountering aggressive gorillas or other dangers are extremely low. With proper preparation, adherence to the guidelines, and respect for the animal’s habitat, gorilla trekking safari in Uganda can be a thrilling and unforgettable safari experience with minimal risk.
