You can break this journey for a day or more or even an excursion to some of the interesting destinations before heading for gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park. The road trip is very scenic as you go through the beautiful Kigezi highlands

The stops you can make may be right from Entebbe or Kampala through the journey as long as you have the right itinerary that can cover your possible safari time. This prevents you from backtracking, which may be time-wasting.

Below are highlights of Popular Destinations On your Way To Bwindi and Mgahinga National park

  • Murchison Falls National park
  • Tour Uganda wildlife Education Center Entebbe
  • Visit Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary
  • Kibale National park
  • Stop at The Equator in Kayabwe or Mpambire drum Village
  • Visit Lake Mburo National Park
  • White Water rafting and Source of River Nile In Jinja.
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park

Murchison Falls National Park

You may plan to visit Murchison Falls National Park before heading to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking. Although this is not on the same route, you can plan to break your safari days in Murchison Falls National Park.

Murchison Falls National Park is bisected by Victoria Nile, creating the southern and Northern sectors. During the launch trip, you may spot a number of animals that love quenching thirst from the banks of this river. Some of these animals include giraffes, herds of elephants, cape buffaloes, oribi, waterbucks, bushbucks, reedbucks, and others.

When you decide to enjoy a game drive in Murchison Falls National Park, you have an opportunity of spotting animals like lions, leopards, cape buffalos, Uganda kobs, bushbucks, hartebeests, and others

You can take the route via Masindi to connect with other stopovers before continuing to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park

Tour Uganda Wildlife Education Center Entebbe

Before departing Entebbe town, you may stop at the Uganda Wildlife Education Center, the Former Entebbe Zoo. This is the summary center for almost all the wild animals that Uganda hosts. Wild animals are kept in exhibits with environments similar to where they are known to live in the wilderness.

With a guided or self-guided walk, you can view animals like hyenas, lions, cheetahs, wild cats, zebras, impalas, ostriches, and others. Even before checking in for your departure flights, you can stop at the Uganda Wildlife Education Center.

Visit Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary Island

This is the home for rescued chimpanzees that cannot be returned to their individual communities. These chimpanzees are saved from poachers, abandoned, orphaned, and so much more.

They are given a community to live at this chimpanzee sanctuary on Koome Island in Lake Victoria. At the moment, about 50 chimpanzees are residents of Ngamba.

One of the reasons for setting up this center is to teach the public about the relevance of protecting chimpanzees and their habitats. To teach the community about the relevance of protecting primates in their natural habitats.

You can take an early morning or afternoon session with these chimpanzees before or after visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park.

Kibale National park

You can take the Northern route before heading to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park. Kibale National Park is home to the largest number of Habituated chimpanzees in East Africa.

This tropical forest rainforest has about 1500 chimpanzees, and only 6 people per session are allowed to visit each troupe. You must purchase a chimpanzee trekking permit to be allowed to visit these chimpanzees.

Kibale National Park is home to other primates like olive baboons, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, L’hoest’s, pottos, grey-cheeked mangabey, and others.

When you plan to do gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking, you get t learn about the difference between these two amazing primates.

Stop at The Equator in Kayabwe or Mpambire Drum Village

As you plan to drive from Entebbe Airport or Kampala City, you may stop at the Equator in Kayabwe. This point is marked by a circular concrete in which the equator that divided the earth into two is believed to pass. Here you can stand on both sides of the earth at the same time and take photos, perform the water experiment and buy some souvenirs too if you wish.

The Mpambire drum village is one of the oldest drum-making points in Buganda. This point is where the royal Buganda drums are made from. There are different local drums, and the history of this center speaks for itself with different kinds of drums, from small to huge ones all producing different sounds. It is amazing how these indigenous people can make sounds out of their hides and skins.

Visit Lake Mburo, National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is like the center of all National parks located in the western part of Uganda. The park has so many angulates like impalas, waterbucks, bushbucks, giraffes, cape buffaloes, reedbucks, herds of elephants, Uganda kobs, and others.

You can make a boat trip on Lake Mburo, where you get to enjoy the great vegetation cover and lovely birds that linger in the forest all day.

You may get the chance to witness some fishermen cast their nets, but this is upon arrangement. this park is a birder’s destination with about 315 bird species registered, including papyrus Gonolek, African Scops owl, Black-collared Barbets, White-tailed nightjar, African finfoots, and others.

White Water Rafting and Source of River Nile In Jinja.

White water Rafting on River Nile is possible before or after gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The Itanda Falls are the rafting point on River Nile. Here you get to enjoy great River Nile tides.

You do not need the experience of white water rafting on River Nile. Although there are different points with different tide strengths, you have a choice of where to stop.

Visiting the source of River Nile is amazing as you watch where Rivet Nile water vigorously departs from Lake Victoria water. The banks of the River Nile are often graced by different birds, and primates live in the vegetation along the banks.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is about 64 km from the Buhoma area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park if you are from the Ishasha sector.  The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park too is about 160 km from Mweya Peninsula, the main administrative area of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

When you take a game drive in the tracks of Queen Elizabeth National Park, especially the Kasenyi area, you may witness lion drama as Uganda Kobs love feeding from here. The beautiful crater lakes track gives you a chance to enjoy the beautiful wet and dry craters.

Taking the launch trip on the Kazinga channel gives you a chance of enjoying the most beautiful part of Queen Elizabeth National Park on the rift valley floor. Watch serried Nile crocodiles, hippos a number of animals that grace the shores. You may have a chance of spotting animals that come down to quench thirst.

The chimpanzee trekking experience in Kyambura Gorge gives you a chance to see some of the human relatives in their natural settings. You need to note that this is a gorge where you may need to hike to the slopes to meet the park's chimpanzees in this forested area. There are other primates in this gorge, like black and white colobus, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, and others.

You can connect to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park from this park.

Mabere Ganyina Mwiru Stalactites and stalagmites

These are some of the most amazing stalactites and stalagmites because of the unbelievable story surrounding them. You can take a visit to these amazing geographical land forms from Kibale National Park or Queen Elizabeth National Park

What To Do In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s main activity is gorilla trekking. You must purchase a gorilla permit from Uganda Wildlife Authority. At the moment, the cost of a gorilla trekking permit is $800 per person per trek.

The gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are currently about 18 families open for tourism. There are subdivided into areas and at the moment, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is subdivided into 4 gorilla trekking areas. These areas include the Buhoma area, Ruhija area, Nkuringo area, and Rushaga area.

Nature walks

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has a lot to see, especially for those fascinated by nature. The forest has a number of trails including Munyara River trail located in the valley of Buhoma where you have great chances of spotting lots of primates and a wide range of birds. Another nature walk trail is Muzabajiro Loop trail which goes to Rukubira Hill where you can enjoy breath taking views of Bwindi canopy, the wester rift valley and Virunga volcanoes.

Community walks

To enjoy the life of local people, you can do the Buhoma community walk where you may take part in banana brewing, visit a homestead, traditional healers, and others. While in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable national park, you can take the Nkuringo community walk. During this walk you may visit the black smith, traditional healer, banana beer brewers and others

Birding in Bwindi Impenetrable National park

The Ruhijah area is the prime birding destination of Bwindi Impenetrable national park. when you take the ridge top route you enjoy the deep valleys having undisturbed forest cover. When you take the Mubwindi Swamp, you may have chance of spotting birds like red-faced woodland Warbler, African Hill Babbler, Collared Apalises, Western Green Tinkerbirds and others.

How safe Is Bwindi Impenetrable National park

Bwindi Impenetrable National park is very safe for you to do all the activities but you must follow the rules given by the ranger guides. The ranger guides work with other Uganda security agencies to keep law and order here.

You also need to pay attention to personal security in order to add to your safety.

List Of What to Pack For A Safari To Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  • Garden gloves to protect your palms from rough surfaces that you may place your palms on in case you tripe and fall.
  • Safari shirt and trousers to protect your body from stinging nettle in the forest and other things that may prick your body and cause you discomfort in the forest.
  • Safari foldable hat to protect your head from water and dew in the forest that drips off the tree trunks or branches.
  • Warm clothes to keep you warm in the night and late afternoon because it gets extremely cold. Even the temperatures of this forest sometimes drop as low as 7 degrees centigrade.
  • A torch to use when lights are out because most lodges here use solar energy for lighting and warming water. This however is dependent on how bright the sun is during the day.
  •  Insect repellant to keep away stinging insects that are with in the forest. Apply the one that your skin is comfortable with to avoid getting skin eczema
  • First aid kit to use for emergency in case you get hurt while in the jungle. You need to pack the basics atleast.
  • Extra fully charged batteries to exchange with in case some run low with power while in the jungle.
  •  Safari boots that can protect your feet from the rough surfaces in the jungle and the boggy ground that you pass through.
  • A duffel bag to pack in your belongings in case you may need to carry them yourself. Pack light but relevantly to be sure of where your belongings are always.
  • Some hard cash to exchange into local currency in case you need to do some on ground purchases

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
