Gorilla Highland Trail

South Western Uganda districts of Kabale, Kisoro and kanungu are beyond gorillas, there is a lot to see in terms of authentic community, cultura and hiking experiences. You will spend time with the local community who will be proud to show off their cultures and your participation in this trail leads to community development as it is a pro poor venture.

Gorilla Highlands brief Itinerary

Day one: Drive to south western Uganda to visit Rwenjeru Campsite and igongo cultural museum.

Day two: Drive to Kabale to visit Great lakes Musuem and House of Edirisa Cultural Museum

Day three: Canoeing and hiking around lake Bunyonyir

Day four: Visit the Batwa in Echuya forest.

Day five: Drive to Mgahinga National park for the cultural walk.

Day Six: Drive back to Kampala

Day 01: Cattle watering at Rwenjeru Campsite and Igongo Musuem

Drive from Kampala to Mbarara town. A stop over at the equator for a break and photography is rewarding. Continue your journey and if lucky, you may spot some zebras and impalas in communal farms close to Lake Mburo National Park. You will later branch off from the Masaka-Mbarara highway to Rwenjeru community campsite for you to participate in cattle watering. This activity takes approximately one hour before driving to Igongo cultural museum for lunch and then a tour of thr Musuem. Dinner and overnight in Mbarara Town

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Lodge: Igongo or similar.

Drive time: 5-6 hours.

Day 02: Great lakes and House of Edirisa Musuem

After breakfast, you will drive further south westwards to visit the great lakes museum and House of Edirisa Bakiga museum. It’s a day to explore cultures of the people is south western Uganda who include the bakiga, banyankole and many others.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Lodge: Crater Bay Cottages or Similar

Drivetime: 4-5 hours

Day 03: Hiking and canoeing on Lake Bunyonyi

After breakfast, get on the canoe to explore several islands in lake bunyonyi including the popular punishment island. After your canoe trek, start your hill hike that takes you to a school, local bar, herbalist, the home of a Rastafarian very knowledgeable about bakiga pre and post colonial cultures and history. Return back to crater bay cottages for overnight or take an adventure to Tom’s home stay experience.

Day 04: Batwa Experience in Echuya Forest

Enjoy your breakfast at leisure and then drive to Echuya forest reserve for a walk. You may choose to use the scenic route that is closer to Lake bunyonyi or use a tarmac one. At Echuya forest reserve, you will meet some batwa guides who will take you for a walk in the forest while demonstrating how and what they used to hunt, herbs they used and so much more. After the walk you will then visits the home of the batwa for some dances and performances. The batwa are referred to as pygmies who used to live in forests but once they were gazzatted, they were then chased out with no choice but to come and live a normal life they were not used to. They spent most of their time in forests hunting, gathering fruits and harnessing wild honey. Continue to Kisoro town for overnight with great views of the virunga ranges of Muhavura, Sabinyo and Mgahinga.

Drive time: 3-4 hours

Day 05: Gorilla tracking, Volcano hike or Walks in Mgahinga

On this day, you may choose to go gorilla trekking in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park. You may choose to climb one of the three volcanoes of Mgahinga, Sabinyo and Muhavura but if you are still interested in culture, then you may takea batwa trail to visit several batwa sites including the famous garama cave. Return to Kisoro for overnight.

Lodge: Kisoro Travellers Rest Inn

Drive time: 2-3 hours

Day 06: Drive back to Kampala/Entebbe

With all the cultural and community memories still, fresh, you will drive back to Kampala/Entebbe for your flight out of Uganda.

4x4 Safari VanOur standard mode of transport is by road and we use 4×4 Safari Vans customized for game viewing and photography. Each safari van comes with a professionally trained driver guide and fuel for the whole safari. Our Safari vans have viewing hatches and each client is entitled to a window seat. Our Vans can take up to eight people.

Our Safari vehicles

We have luxury latest Land cruisers each driven by professionally trained driver guides and fuel. They have pop up roofs for proper game viewing and photography. They come with a small fridge for cooling your drinking water while on safari (which is always included while IN THE VEHICLE). They have invertors for charging small gargets such as your smart phones and cameras. They can seat five to a maximum of seven people and each client is guaranteed of a window seat.
