The Democratic Republic of Congo, simply referred to as Congo, is a land of untamed beauty and thrilling adventures that beckon intrepid travelers. From the captivating lowland and mountain gorilla treks in Virunga National Park to the exhilarating hikes up Mount Nyiragongo, Congo offers a bucket-load of natural wonders and unique experiences for all who dare to explore it. Although Congo does not have a good security reputation, its wonders on the eastern border with Rwanda and Uganda are still accessible to seasoned travelers. Most access these attractions through Uganda and Rwanda.

Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the last strongholds of the endangered mountain gorillas. Virunga offers a rare and priceless opportunity to watch gorillas in their natural habitat.

On a gorilla trekking excursion in Virunga National Park, you will hike through dense and lush forests on the mountain slopes, offering a real sense of adventure. Park rangers, well-trained and knowledgeable, guide you through this journey, sharing insights about gorilla behavior and the conservation efforts in place.

As you venture deeper into the jungle, the anticipation builds. Finally, you come upon a gorilla family, and there, amidst the forest's hush, you witness the gorillas' daily routines. The connection that one feels with these magnificent creatures is nothing short of magical. Remember, these encounters are bound by strict rules to protect the gorillas and their habitat, so listen carefully to the guidance of the park rangers.

Aside from gorilla trekking and volcano hiking, Virunga National Park offers diverse attractions to complement Congo Safaris. Visitors can explore the breathtaking Albertine Rift landscapes and take a safari through the vast savanna of the central sector's Ishasha Plains, enjoying fantastic views of big mammal wildlife, including elephants, lions, hippos, buffalo, and giant forest hogs.

Virunga National Park is located in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, bordering Uganda and Rwanda. The park's headquarters are in Rumangabo.

How to Get There: The primary gateway to Virunga is Goma, a city with an international airport. From Goma, you can arrange transportation to the park headquarters in Rumangabo.

Kahuzi-Biega National Park:

Kahuzi-Biega National Park, another UNESCO World Heritage site, is a sanctuary for both Eastern Lowland Gorillas and a wealth of exotic wildlife perfect for our Congo Safaris. This park is characterized by lush rainforests, rolling hills, and impressive biodiversity.

Kahuzi-Biega is a prime destination for those seeking to encounter Eastern Lowland Gorillas, which are the largest gorilla species. It offers an opportunity to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat and support their conservation.

Besides gorilla trekking, the park offers captivating primate encounters with Grauer's gorillas, colobus monkeys, and chimpanzees. Nature lovers can explore pristine waterfalls, hiking trails, and enjoy birdwatching in this stunning rainforest.

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is situated in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, near the city of Bukavu.

Bukavu is the main entry point to the park and can be reached by road or air. From Bukavu, you can access the park by car.

Hiking Mount Nyiragongo Volcano

If you're an adventure seeker, a hike up Mount Nyiragongo is a challenging yet rewarding experience and a popular addition to most Congo Safaris. This active volcano boasts a stunning, bubbling lava lake, making it a natural wonder. The hike is physically demanding, so be sure to prepare adequately with appropriate gear, including sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing, and a capable guide.

The journey to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo takes you through dense forests and ascending volcanic rock. The trail is steep and can be demanding, but the views at the top, especially at night when the fiery glow of the lava lake illuminates the surroundings, are worth every step. Camping at the summit allows you to witness the mesmerizing display of nature's raw power.

Location: Mount Nyiragongo is located in Virunga National Park, near the city of Goma.

How to Get There: Goma is the gateway to Nyiragongo, and from there, you'll embark on a journey to the park's headquarters in Rumangabo.

Attractions: In addition to the breathtaking volcanic landscapes, Nyiragongo offers opportunities for night-time volcano hikes, camping at the summit, and stunning views of the active lava lake. The trek through lush forests and the opportunity to witness the bubbling lava lake are the main attractions.

Practical Travel Information:

Visa: The Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN), the Congolese wildlife authority, has an agreement with Direction Générale de Migration (DGM), the Congolese immigration service, to facilitate obtaining 2-week, single-entry tourist visas for people visiting Virunga National Park. The cost of the visa is USD 105. Nonetheless, you can book your Congo travel visa with DGM.

Health Precautions: Consult with a healthcare professional regarding required vaccinations and health precautions, given the presence of tropical diseases in the region prevalent on Congo Safaris.

Permits: Secure permits for gorilla trekking, safaris, and volcano hikes through the park authority or with Encounter Africa for easy logistics and fall-back insurance. These often have limited availability and should be arranged in advance.

These guides possess invaluable knowledge about the terrain and the wildlife, enhancing the safety and quality of your experience.
