Uganda Wildlife Authority is proposing to scrap of low season gorilla permit offer that has been running for almost three years. Discounted gorilla permits offer which has been running in low seasons of April, May and November is expected to stop when 2018/2019 Uganda Wildlife Authority tariffs are in place. We therefore have to wait until these tariffs are out. This was revealed by Uganda Wildlife Authority representative during a consultative meeting between Uganda Wildlife Authority and Association of Uganda Tour Operators.

Discounted gorilla permits offer to be scrapped off-Reasons

One of the reason why Discounted gorilla permits will be scrapped off is that in the wake of Rwanda increasing their gorilla permits from USD750.00 to USD1500 per permit per person, per trek, Uganda then becomes a cheaper option in the region by maintaining the gorilla permit price at USD600. During UWA and AUTO consultative meeting, Discounted gorilla permits to be scrapped of was not to look at gorilla trekking in Uganda as something cheap. Stake holders in the tourism industry are yet to review this and forge the best way forward.

Discounted or low season gorilla permits where introduced in 2014 when Uganda celebrated her 50th independence day and this promotion was meant to reward all tourists visiting Uganda. It then was extended to every low season months of the year with rates being modified per year. During this offer, Uganda has received many tourists in the months of April, May and November than before.
