Kibale National Park lies in western Uganda, sharing the migration corridor of about 180 kilometers with Queen Elizabeth National Park from the Ishasha sector to the Sebitoli forest. This tropical rainforest is believed to host over 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, black and white colobus, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, olive baboons, pottos, bush babies, and others.

Currently, the chimpanzee population of Kibale National Park is estimated to be 1,500, yet Uganda is estimated to have a population of about 5,000. At the moment, 13 chimpanzee communities are fully habituated to tourist visits, and each day, a maximum of 6 tourists are allowed to visit a troop of chimpanzees per session.

As a foreign resident in East Africa, if you are interested in chimpanzee habituation, you must book a permit in advance, especially for the peak season. The high Uganda tourism season is June, July, August, September, December, and January.

Before digging deep into what happens during the chimpanzee habituation experience, let's first understand what the chimpanzee habituation experience is.

What Is Chimpanzee Habituation Experience?

Chimpanzee habituation experience is an adventure where a limited number of tourists escort a team of researchers and habituators in the wilderness to follow a semi-habituated chimpanzee community. This is one of the processes a chimpanzee community undergoes to get them used to human presence without altering their nature.

For each day, the chimpanzee habituation team wakes up earlier than others to follow a chimpanzee community under habituation for a reasonable time till they get used to human presence without altering their nature. Chimpanzee habituation experience is one of the means to collect funds that support the conservation of these endangered chimpanzees.

What Is Included In The Cost Of Chimpanzee Habituation Permit For Foreign Residents?

As mentioned above, the cost of chimpanzee habituation permits for foreign residents is currently $300 per person. This cost includes researcher services, ranger guide fee, chimpanzee conservation support, local community contribution, security during chimpanzee habituation, park entrance fees for the day, 4 hours of chimpanzee habituation.

Exclusions of chimpanzee habituation permit cost are no transport to Kibale National Park, tips, accommodation, gas, snacks, and any other items of personal nature.

At Encounter African Safaris, we can tailor the chimpanzee habituation safari itinerary on your behalf to soothe your needs. Our safari consultant works with you to meticulously create the most suitable timetable for your chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale National Park, plus additional activities you can combine with this adventure.

What is the best time to book a chimpanzee habituation experience?

Chimpanzee habituation experience is all year around adventure, but most tourists prefer the dry season, normally June to September or December to January. The weather conditions of Kibale Forest National Park are fairly dry, with less precipitation. The tails in the park are more defined and quicker to go through.

Although the forest has limited undergrowth, the dry season has most of these plants not overgrown to obstruct your way.

Chimpanzees feed closer to the ground during the dry season, yet the severe wet seasons push them up in the trees. The dry season is the most appropriate for those interested in photography or filming the chimpanzees during the habituation experience.

The wet season, which is normally March, April, May, and November, is still okay for chimpanzee habituation experience, but expect some rains that may push them up the trees most of the

What Accommodation To Book During Gorilla Habituation Experience In Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park has a number of accommodation options for your nights as you go for a chimpanzee habituation experience. The Kibale National Park accommodations are categorized into luxury, mid-range, and budget facilities.

Kibale National Park accommodations include Primates Lodge, Ndali Lodge, Kibale Safari Lodge, Chimps Nest, Kyaninga Lodge, and CVK. You may overnight in Fort Portal town, but you have to drive in the dark to catch up with the briefing.

How Long Is Gorilla Habituation Experience?

When you locate the chimpanzees during the chimpanzee habituation experience, hours are allowed before them. On the way to find the chimpanzees, the time taken to get where they may have been or may be nesting is hard to determine. Some tourists have got to these chimpanzees in two hours while others have used more time.

Chimpanzees have about 98% human DNA, making them the closest human relatives in the animal kingdom. You get to notice the resemblance between the chimpanzees and humans as you emerge from vines to face the community of chimpanzees. These chimpanzees are habituated, so expect them to show some wild behaviors like going into hiding, hooting, beating tree trunks, and so much more.

This doesn't mean take off but stay calm, and the researchers and trackers who have had experience with that community of chimpanzees will tell what next. Listen attentively and show no signs of panic, or you may throw the entire forest into a stampede.

What Is The Age Limit For Gorilla Habituation Experience?

Persons beyond 15 years are accepted to do chimpanzee habituation experience because a child below this age may not withstand the rules of chimpanzee habituation, especially the time with the chimps. Four hours with the chimpanzees may be so long for a 15 and below child to withstand. They easily get tired and fed up, which may require adults to give a hand, yet there is no turning back until the chimpanzee habituation experience is done.

Even the provocative nature of the chimpanzees may prompt a child below this age to shout, yet visitors are required to make no noise in the forest or when with the chimpanzees. This may cause them to get agitated and move into hiding.

What Is The Cost Of Chimpanzee Habituation Experience?

The chimpanzee habituation safari costs are packaged according to luxury, mid-range, and budget. The gorilla permit cost is universal with all these plans, but some of the factors below are based on to determine the safari quotations.

The number of days on safari, number of people traveling with, additional activities to combine with chimpanzee habituation safari, a time when you book the safari, the safari package you choose, and others.

How Sure Can I Be To Find The Chimpanzees During Chimpanzees Habituation Experience?

Finding the chimpanzees during chimpanzee habituation is a sure deal. The researcher and habituators have some ideas on how to deal with the chimpanzees under habituation.

They may show some unfamiliar traits like going into hiding, but with the advice from the researchers and habituators, you get to complete your four hours.

The chimpanzees under the chimpanzee habituation experience require you to have some level of patience because they are still learning to bear human presence.

How Difficult Is Chimpanzee Habituation Experience?

The nature of the topography where chimpanzees in Kibale National Park live is generally fairly flat, with the park's northern tip being 1590 meters above sea level. While searching for the chimpanzees and following them, there may be no hiking.

Even the undergrowth is fairly short, making the trails more passable for tourists.

During the search for the chimpanzee community, the ranger guide with a machete tries to trim and create an opening for the rest of the group to access the chimpanzees.

The chimpanzees have teased you for a while but have no intention of hurting anyone unless you violate the rules of chimpanzee habituation.

Wearing the right chimpanzee habituation permits saves you from getting hurt by rough surfaces in the jungle like stinging nettles, insect bites, and much more.

How To Get To Kibale National Park

By Road

Kibale National Park lies in western Uganda, 26 kilometers south of fort portal town. Two routes can lead you to Kibale National Park, the southern passing via Mubende to Fort Portal. The southern route goes through Mbarara and Kamwenge.

Kibale National Park has two ranger stations: Kanyanchu Visitor Center as the main center and Sebitoli Forest Camp as the secondary tourism center.

By air

Each day, flights from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip depart to Kasese, Airstrip from which you can catch a transfer vehicle to the park.

Charter flight services are available at Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip.

What Are The Dos And Don'ts Of Chimpanzee Habituation Experience?

  • To promote your safety and the chimpanzees, some guidelines must be followed so as not to cause any discomfort during the chimpanzee habituation experience.
  • Keep your voice low while you search for the chimpanzees, as they are very keen on intruders in their environment.
  • In case you have a communicable infection like flu, cough, or cholera, volunteer to stay behind to prevent chances of passing an infection to the highly susceptible chimpanzees.
  • While with the chimpanzees, wear a clean mask and sanitize your shoes before entering the forest.
  • If you wish to smoke or eat, do it away from the chimpanzees to avoid them grabbing it from you.
  • Only enter the rainforest with a ranger guide to avoid crossing the path of harmful forest dwellers like forest elephants.
  • If you wish to defecate, as the ranger guide, dig a hole for you and cover well so that the forest dwellers can exhume none.
  • Spitting in vegetation or the ground is forbidden as you may pass an infection to the chimpanzees.
  • Please do not use flash photography when taking photographs as you may scare the chimpanzees that are highly suspicious of new occurrences in their vicinity.
  • Provoking the chimpanzees is forbidden as you may cause them to walk into hiding. Even mimicking the chimpanzees is not a good idea, as you may need to know what you are communicating.
  • Littering the forest alters its nature, yet this is the sole provider for the chimpanzees and all other forest dwellers.
  • Upon finding the chimpanzees, keep 8 meters away from them, and even when they move closer, retreat slowly without recognition.
  • Only four hours are allowed in their company when you locate the chimpanzees. Ensure you follow all necessary rules of chimpanzee habituation.

What Can I Combine Chimpanzee Habituation Experience With In Kibale National Park?

Chimpanzee Trekking

Chimpanzee trekking families result from chimpanzee habituation for keen primatologists. A combo of chimpanzee habituation experience with chimpanzee trekking gives you a chance to find the difference between the two primate safaris. Kibale National Park gives you the right feel of both.

Birding In Kibale National Park

This tropical forest has over 325 bird species, of which Albertine rift endemics are represented by at least 6 bird species, but hope for an extended list is still open. The Bigodi sanctuary on the periphery of Kibale National Park is often graced by a variety of birds, including the rare Shoe Bill Stork, Yellow Spotted Nicator, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Crowned Eagle, Black Bee Eater, And Several Others.

Children Activities In Kibale National Park

If you have traveled with children, don't worry; they have children's activities as you go for the chimpanzee habituation experience. For about two hours, children with a well-trained children's ranger guide go for eco-friendly activities, like batik making, pond dipping, cyanotype, photography, and so much more.

Visit The Ndali Crater Area

Just a small distance OF about 20 kilometers south of Fort Portal, you can enjoy the stunning view of both wet and dry crater lakes. The most outstanding is the Kyaninga crater with specular views. This view is most beautiful when you hike to the top of one of the highlands.

A dozen of craters, including over 30 lakes, you can enjoy this beautiful view and capture the best photos.

You also get to see the mighty Rwenzori ranges while standing at the top of some of the highlands, especially during the clear day.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
