Compare chimpanzee trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

Compare chimpanzee trekking in Uganda and Rwanda.

Comparing chimpanzee trekking in Uganda and Rwanda is a fascinating exploration of the two distinct experiences that offer a glimpse into the lives of our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. With both countries are home to the sizable chimpanzee populations, the experiences of trekking them are shaped by the unique characteristics of each safari destination. In Uganda, chimpanzee trekking is primarily conducted in Kibale Forest National Park, which boasts the highest concentration of chimpanzees in Africa, with over 1500 individuals.

The park’s lush tropical forest, crisscrossed by the narrow trails and then the streams, provides an immersive environment for the trekkers to track and observe these intelligent and then the social creatures. In Rwanda’s chimpanzee trekking experience is centered in Nyungwe Forest National Park, which is a home to a smaller but equally fascinating population of chimpanzees.

Here, the trekkers must navigate the forest’s steeper slopes and more dense undergrowth, which can make the experience feel more adventurous and physically demanding. One of the key differences between the two experiences is the terrain and the habitat, with Uganda’s Kibale Forest National Park offering a more straightforward and accessible trekking safari experience, whereas Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park presents a more challenging and then rugged environment. Additionally, the guides and then the trackers in Uganda tend to have more experience and then expertise, having worked with the chimpanzees for decades, whereas in Rwanda, the guides are still developing their skills and knowledge, although they are rapidly improving.

Another significant distinction lies in the overall atmosphere and then ambiance of the two experiences, with Uganda’s Kibale National Park offering a more relaxed and then peaceful environment, whereas Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park can feel more vibrant and energetic, with a greater sense of excitement and anticipation. In terms of cost, Uganda’s chimpanzee trekking experience tends to be more affordable, with the permits costing around 150 USD per person per trek, whereas in Rwanda the permits cost around 250 USD per person per trek, although this includes the additional activities and then the services.

Ultimately, both Uganda and Rwanda offer an unforgettable chimpanzee trekking experience that allows visitors to connect with this incredible animal in their natural habitat. While each experience has its unique characteristics, challenges, and rewards, they share a common goal of promoting the conservation and then the welfare of the chimpanzees while also supporting local communities and then the economies.

On an African safari chimpanzee trekking should be on every traveler’s bucket list if they are interested in having the most rewarding safari activity in Africa. Among the most common destinations in Africa where chimpanzee trekking takes place includes Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and then Democratic Republic of Congo. A number of tourists interested in primate safaris in Rwanda and Uganda have faced challenge of choosing the best destinations to carry out chimpanzee trekking safaris because of the fact that Uganda and Rwanda have rewarding attractions and features about the activity that will make your safari experience quite interesting. With the incredible chimpanzee trekking experience in Uganda and Rwanda this article brings you some of the differences between the different in Uganda and Rwanda and here are some of the differences between the different destinations that I suggest with that will help you choose the best safari destinations that will help you plan for your safari in either of the national parks for a perfect and exhilarating safari experience,

Chimpanzee trekking safari in Uganda is a bit quite rewarding as compared to chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda that is for the tourists interested in having different chimpanzee trekking experiences in the different destinations. For chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, the tourists will always have the chance to visit to participate in chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park which is the most known chimpanzee trekking safari destination in Uganda with more than 1500 chimpanzees and with four chimpanzee troops, tourists can also participate in chimpanzee trekking in Queen Elizabeth National Park in the Kyambura Gorge that is also known as the valley of the apes where you can get to see various primate species like Vervet monkeys, silver monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, Dent’s monkeys, and many others.

On the other side, about the chimpanzee trekking in Uganda the tourists as well can participate chimpanzee trekking in Budongo forest which is part of Murchison Falls National Park the largest national park in Uganda. Other chimpanzee trekking safari destinations in Uganda includes Kaniyo Padi which is part of the Budongo forest, Semuliki National Reserve, Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary, Kalinzu forest and among others, With the numerous safari destinations where you can take part in chimpanzee trekking in Uganda you will have the most outstanding safari experiences and the opportunity of choosing the best safari destination that fits your preference.

Chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda, Tourists will get the chance to visit and explore Nyungwe forest national park, where you can participate in the chimpanzee trekking in either Nyungwe forest or Cyamudongo forest where they will spend one hour in the presence of the chimpanzees. It should also be noted that although there are chimpanzees in the Gishwati Mukura National Park in Rwanda chimpanzee trekking in the park is not well recognized like that in Nyungwe Forest National Park because of the large numbers of the chimpanzees that can be spotted therefore on your coming primate safari in Rwanda you should visit the park for a perfect Rwanda safari. For the tourists that are interested in the diversity when it comes to chimpanzee trekking they will not get the best in Rwanda as compared to Uganda which has a number of various safari destinations to select from and also visit to make your chimpanzee trekking experience quite memorable.

If you are interested in understanding more about the chimpanzees in Africa without participating in chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is the charming safari destination because it will give you the chance to participate in chimpanzee habituation that gives four hours of experience compared to one hour during chimpanzee trekking it’s done in Kibale Forest National Park. Chimpanzee habitation is just like gorilla habituation in Uganda because it involves training a primate group to get used to the human presence which makes trekking very rewarding. Chimpanzee habitation will give you the opportunity to observe the authentic reactions of the chimpanzees as they get exposed to the human encounters and interesting about the activity is the fact that you will get to participate in the training sessions which will give you the massive experience of understanding more about primates in the wild. On the other hand on a Rwanda safari, there is only chimpanzee trekking experience in Nyungwe Forest National Park. For more experience that is chimpanzee habituation it’s only done on a Uganda safari in Kibale Forest National Park.

Tourists interested in chimpanzee trekking in Uganda can obtain the chimpanzee trekking permits from a reputable tour company like Encounter Africa Safaris or from Uganda Wildlife Authority the government company in charge of tourism, where you can get the permits for other tourism activities in Uganda like gorilla trekking in Uganda in Mgahinga gorilla national park and  Bwindi Impenetrable national park, game drives in Queen Elizabeth national park and Murchison falls national park, hiking the Virunga Mountains in Uganda, gorilla habituation in Uganda and among many other safari activities of your choice. For the chimpanzee trekking permits in Rwanda you will book from one of the reputable tour company like Encounter Africa Safaris or from the Rwanda Development Board the government body in charge of tourism in Rwanda where you can also book for the various safari activities like boat cruise on Lake Ihema, golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park, gorilla trekking in Rwanda and among many others.

Another distinction between trekking chimpanzees in Rwanda and trekking chimpanzees in Uganda is the distance between the parks that inhabit chimpanzees in these two safari destinations. It is very simple to go to Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda than it is to get to Uganda National Park that is Kibale Forest National Park. Rwanda’s roads are very good, clean and well maintained and it’s four to hour and a half hours on road from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest national park. In Uganda, however the roads are not as good as those of Rwanda that is five and a half to six hours. In Rwanda the tourists who do not want to drive long distances can take a helicopter or the private charter from Kigali to Nyungwe forest national park that is offered by Akagera Aviation, or they can use the domestic flights operated by the Rwandair that land at Kamembe airport and its very fast that takes about 45 minutes. In Uganda, there are no direct helicopter flights to Kibale Forest National Park but it is possible to use helicopter flights to Queen Elizabeth National Park that land in Mweya or Kasese in order to do chimpanzee trekking in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kyambura Gorge that usually takes about one to two hours, but if you are interested in  chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, you can then use ground transfer from Queen Elizabeth National Park to Kibale National Park which is a bit not straight than Nyungwe Forest National Park.

The number of the chimpanzees in Uganda is far more than the number of the chimpanzees inn Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda, which has a large population of the chimpanzees believed to be over 500 in number, though in Uganda that is known as the primate capital has estimated of over 1500 chimpanzees, this makes it very easy for the tourists to witness a large number of the chimpanzees. With a large number of the chimpanzee primates in Uganda’s several chimpanzee habitats, including that the most famous popular Kibale Forest National park trekking chimpanzees in Uganda particularly in Kibale Forest National Park is far simpler than trekking chimpanzees in Rwanda’s Nyungwe or Cyamudongo forests. Therefore it’s a sure that you will not miss out seeing chimpanzees on a chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park because the chimpanzees in Rwanda are normally sighted only in trees, however in Uganda’s Kibale Forest National Park you will encounter these beautiful creatures in the forests.

Chimpanzee trekking experience in Rwanda and Uganda.

Chimpanzee trekking safari experience in Rwanda and Uganda starts very early in the morning at the park headquarters with the briefing about the rules and regulations to follow during the chimpanzee trekking by the park guides and rangers. After the briefing, you will be grouped into various groups of 6 members per group and each group will be given a park guide and ranger that led you through the experience, you will start trekking in the forest in search of the chimpanzees which takes about thirty minutes and 5 hours depending on where the chimpanzees are located because these magnificent usually move from one place to another in search of food.

During the trekking while looking for the chimpanzees you will be able to view various biodiversity including other primate species, various bird species, plant species and among many others and once the chimpanzees are located you will be given a period of one hour to be in the presence of the natural habitat which gives you an opportunity to learn more about their natural habitat, watch them feed, watch them breastfeed, watching them play, watching them hunt, watching them groom young ones, taking their pictures and recording videos to show back home. After the experience, you will trek back to the starting point at the park headquarters to where you will receive the chimpanzee trekking experience.

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda and Rwanda is an exciting and stunning safari activity that can be done all year around depending on your preference and choice of safari destination. For more information about anything about chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation, do not hesitate to contact us at Encounter Africa Safaris for various chimpanzee trekking packages you will not regret or get disappointed.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
