Can you visit mountain gorillas without a ranger guide in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

July 11, 2024

Can you visit mountain gorillas without a ranger guide in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

You can only walk in the Bwindi forest with a ranger guide. The Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides are in place to protect the mountain gorillas, other forest dwellers, the habitat, and tourists. Tourists gather at the ranger station daily, hand in their gorilla safari permits and personal documents for verification, and then brief.

8 day Uganda safari via Kigali

5 days gorillas and chimp safari

8 days gorilla tracking tour

19 day best of Uganda safari

15 days Uganda Rwanda safari

18 day Uganda Ultimate Safari

16 day primate game and culture

11 days gorilla tracking safari

5 days gorilla and Nile river source

17 day Uganda birding and wildlife

After the briefing, tourists are allocated gorilla families, but the criteria used for gorilla permit allocation are unknown. Sometimes, gorilla families are given according to interests, age bracket, relations, physical capability, etc.

Note that Bwindi Impenetrable National Park permits are allocated according to the four areas: in the North, Rnorth in the East, Nkeastgo, and Rushaga in the southern part of Bwindi forest. Since briefing in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park starts very early in the morning, about 0730 hours, it is best to overnight within or closer to the area where the gorilla permits are booked. This is to avoid driving to catch up with a briefing in a briefing area.

Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides are well-trained and experienced with most parts of the Bwindi forest, so they may have clues about where the mountain gorillas are suspected. Each day, a team of Ranger guides wakes up early to patrol the Bwindi forest and establish where the gorilla families might have nested. They also get clues on the possible hangout spot for the mountain gorillas.

As an individual, you may know to learn about the gorilla family. It is very easy to forget some of the guidelines of gorilla trekking as an individual and violet some, which may cause the mountain gorillas to move into the deeper forest, prolonging your time in the wilderness. Mountain gorillas get to know about the presence of intruders in their environment before you find them because they operate a spy network.

Bwindi forest is vast, covering an area of over 327 Square kilometers draped by tangled vegetation over a deeply fissured landscape, steep, slippery valleys, and draughty ridges. These open chances for you to get swallowed by the jungle without a poor network connection. If you are unfamiliar with the forest, you may never return home.

Being an ancient forest, Bwindi is a biosphere reserve hosting other animals like about 51 reptiles, 120 types of mammals, and others that may harm an unprotected person. These wild animals are not habituated to human presence like the mountain gorillas.

How do you book gorilla permits for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

To be allowed a visit to the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you need a gorilla permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. You can do either gorilla trekking or gorilla habituation experience.

What is gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking is an adventure where a maximum of 8 tourists visit a fully habituated gorilla family and have only one hour with the mountain gorillas. Visiting the mountain gorillas is limited to one hour for conservation reasons. Gorilla trekking permits for Bwindi forest are booked according to the area, which is Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga

What Is Gorilla Habituation Experience?

The gorilla habituation experience is an adventure where tourists accompany a team of researchers to follow a semi-habituated gorilla family and spend four hours with them. Mountain gorillas may display some odd traits, like going into hiding, hooting, and much more.

Currently, Uganda has four gorilla families open for gorilla habituation adventure.

How much is a Uganda gorilla permit?

  • Uganda Gorilla trekking Permit cost

Until June 30th, 2024, the Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs $700 for foreign nonresidents, $600 for foreign residents, and 250000 for East Africans.

From July 1st, 2024, until June 30th, 2026, the Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs $800 for foreign nonresidents, $700 for foreign residents, $500 for other African countries, and 300,000 for East Africans.

The gorilla trekking permit cost covers park entrance fees, ranger guide fees, security, mountain gorilla conservation, local community support, one hour with the mountain gorillas, and a certificate after the gorilla trek.

Excludes porter hire, packed lunch, snacks, accommodation, and other personal expenses.

  • Uganda gorilla Habituation experience permit cost

The gorilla habituation experience permit costs $1500 for foreign nonresidents, $1000 for foreign residents, and $ 750,000 for East Africans. From July 1st, 2024, the cost of a gorilla habituation experience permit for residents of other African countries will be $1000 per person per trek.

Inclusions in the gorilla habituation permit cost are park entrance fees, researcher fees, four hours with the mountain gorillas, security, mountain gorilla conservation, ranger guide fee, certificate, briefing, ranger guide fee, and others.

Exclusions in the gorilla habituation permit cost are accommodation, sedan chair hire, transport, and other personal expenses.

Select a date when you hope to do gorilla trekking or gorilla habituation experience in Uganda. You can also state when you wish your gorilla safari to start and end so that a date for your gorilla tour is within your travel time.

When you enquire from us about your gorilla safari, our tour consultant checks for gorilla permit availability from the Uganda Wildlife Authority list.

As soon as favorable gorilla permit availability is attained, our consultant will get back to you shortly. This is because the status of the gorilla permits changes at any time without notifying anyone. The number of gorilla permits opened to the public is limited, with a maximum of 8 per gorilla trekking family, 4 per gorilla habituation family, and others.

Purchase your gorilla permit as soon as possible to avoid losing it since a first come, first served basis is used to book Uganda gorilla permits. No gorilla permit is reserved without payment.

Later, forward us some personal details to be added to your gorilla permit cards, such as your full name as presented on the passport, date of birth, nationality, passport expiry date, and others.

Can I pay for the Uganda Gorilla permit in installments?

Yes, the Uganda Wildlife Authority accepts installment gorilla permit purchases as long as you book your permits 90 days before the gorilla safari date and top it up 90 days before the gorilla tour date. Failure to comply with this will result in your gorilla permit being re-opened to the public without your notification. You stand to lose the deposit on your gorilla permit, too.

It is best to pay in full for your gorilla safari permit to avoid last-minute disappointment if you forget to top it up.

Is A Gorilla Tour In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Strenuous?

Finding the mountain gorillas in the Bwindi forest is quite challenging because of the nature of the terrain of this area. The Virunga area was affected by volcanic activities that formed several landforms like plateaus and ridges. These are tangled with thick vines that drape down to obstruct the way.

Sometimes, the mountain gorillas lounge or feed from the slopes, so you have to hike to find them as tourists. You may need a supporting stick when the slopes are slippery and soggy from the decomposing matter. The ranger guide with a machete tries to trim the extra vines to create a way for you.

Do exercises before traveling for the gorilla safari to keep fit, just in case you must hike. Wear the proper gorilla safari gear comfortable enough to support you under the harsh conditions of the jungle.

Pack some energizers to munch on during the stops as you search for the mountain gorillas in the jungle. Do not focus on finding only the mountain gorillas; look out for other forest occupants like the other primate species, bird species, butterflies, and so many others.

What Is The Age Limit For Gorilla Safaris In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

15 years and over is the age limit for gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The gorilla safaris include walking in the jungle, which is rough for a child below this age. Even the time spent locating the mountain gorillas is still being determined as sometimes tourists find the mountain gorillas in about 2 hours while others spend more time. It may be hard for children to cope with waiting to see the mountain gorillas.

How Sure Can I Be To See The Mountain Gorillas In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

Seeing the mountain gorillas is a sure activity even though they live in a vast jungle and are not restricted by anything from moving.

There is a 99% chance of seeing mountain gorillas in the jungle because they live in cohesive families that do not move without reason. This is why they can be traced.

Each day, a team of ranger guides patrol the gorilla families to obtain where they might have spent the night and possible hangout spots for the day. Rangers and tourists use some of these clues to find the mountain gorillas.

Each gorilla family is first habituated for an unknown time until proven ready for public visits. Gorilla habituation is a process by which researchers help a wild gorilla family get used to humans' presence without altering their nature. The process may take about two years or more as the gorilla family is under surveillance, and notes about it are recorded.

Tourists are asked to participate in searching for the mountain gorillas by looking out for clues left behind, like freshly leftover foliage, footprints, fresh dung, listening to murmurs, and much more.

How much is a gorilla safari in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The cost of a gorilla safari to Bwindi forest starts with the cost of a gorilla permit. If you are interested in gorilla trekking, the permit costs $700 until June 30th, 2024. From July 1st, 2024, the Uganda gorilla permit will cost $800 per person per trek. Other safari logistics compose the entire package.

At Encounter Africa Safaris, we work with you to package a gorilla tour to soothe your interests, including logistics like accommodation, transport, and others. We package our safaris according to High-End, Mid-range, and Basic. Our goal for every safari is to offer value for money and make our customer's safari dream of meeting mountain gorillas a reality and fun.

To make a gorilla safari quotation, some items included are accommodation costs, transport costs, additional safari activities, and others. These safari logistics are priced according to the number of people traveling, the number of safari days, the type of safari package you travel, the time of booking, and others.

Is the cost of gorilla safari worth the expense?

Every coin paid for your gorilla safari is worth the adventure, getting you closer to the only leftover mountain gorillas in the world. Not only are you one of the lucky people for the day to be in the company of the mountain gorillas, but you also get to prove the mountain gorillas' actual life.

On the outside, the mountain gorillas look intimidating and grumpy, but you realize how vulnerable they are when in their company. They are more scared of you and, when agitated, can quickly run into hiding instead of staging a war against you. While with the mountain gorillas, you cannot resist their adorable spell.

Permits are sold to collect more funds to support the conservation of the mountain gorillas. Most money from selling gorilla permits is used for mountain gorilla conservation. Even annually, a percentage of the funds from mountain gorilla safaris is given back to the community to compensate for the damages mountain gorillas cause when they straw into the community.

Hiring a porter helps you not get weighed down by the heavy gorilla safari gear. A porter is a local person hired to carry your gorilla safari gear and may give you a push when tired. This is one way for the locals to earn from the presence of the mountain gorillas and appreciate their importance. If you wish to give back to the local community directly, you may hire a porter.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
