The drier season is preferred for mountain climbing as the trails are drier, and there is less precipitation. Kilimanjaro Mountain is the world’s free-standing mountain block.

Kilimanjaro mountain climbing happens in Tanzania, and it has some stunning views. Hiking Mountain Kilimanjaro takes about three routes: the Machame route, the Lemosho route, the Rongai route, and many others. Each of these hiking routes offers a different experience with advantages and disadvantages.

The dry season, which is normally June to October and December to February, is most preferred.

Months Most Preferred For Mountain Climbing In Kilimanjaro In Tanzania.

June, July, August, September, October, December and January

Although it is expected to be cold while you climb Mount Kilimanjaro, less rain is received. The trails are drier, and the skies are clearer with amazing views. Some light showers may be received during these months, especially as you climb through the rainforest and moorland.

This is, however, the busiest season when more people engage in mountain climbing. Expect to be in the company of other tourists during the dry season, so you may have company as you break off at the campsite.

When you get a chance to climb Kilimanjaro mountain during the full moon time, it is a more exciting time. The glaciers are sparkling and offer stunning views, too. In case you are on the seven-day Kilimanjaro hike, begin the hike at least five days before the expected full moon date.

Although mountaineering on Kilimanjaro is an all-year-round adventure, the drier and warm months are preferred when the routes are passable.

Some Of The Routes You Expect To Trek On Kilimanjaro Mountain

 Lemosho Route

The Lemosho route on Kilimanjaro is most exciting but longer, but first-timers climbing have a better experience with this route. You enjoy stunning views as you ascend Kilimanjaro, its incredible views, and evergreen vegetation.

 The Machame route

The Machame route is the most challenging but the shortest trek, with breathtaking views.

Rongai route

This route is also on the Kenyan side of Mountain Kilimanjaro but is quite challenging. As you ascend the rongai route, you may see some stunning games like antelopes, elephants, and buffaloes.

When To Climb Mountain Kilimanjaro Month By Month

Climbing Kilimanjaro from January to February

These are generally dry months, but some showers may be experienced occasionally. They are pretty suitable for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Expect some sunny and dry skies while climbing Kilimanjaro, but it is exciting.

Climbing Kilimanjaro from March to May

The rains intensify from March to May, making it quite challenging to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro. The trails are more slippery and soggy from the rains that fall.

For those looking for tranquility and solitude while hiking mountain Kilimanjaro, this is the time to take advantage of when fewer or no people are on the trails. Even in the evening, the campsites you stop at while ascending Mountain Kilimanjaro are quieter, giving you time to relax after a tiresome long day of hiking.

Climbing Mountain Kilimanjaro from June to October

Hiking mountain Kilimanjaro from June to October is a season that is known to be dry, although cold conditions are expected, not the rains. Remember to carry rainproof gear, too, although it is expected to be dry during these months.

This is the peak season for climbing the Mountain Kilimanjaro, as many people prepare to take on this African challenge when it is most convenient. You need to book in advance so that preparations can be made.

If you need company to keep sharing with as you ascend Mount Kilimanjaro, this is the time to take advantage of it.

Hiking mountain Kilimanjaro in November

Tanzania generally experiences rainy seasons from November to mid-December, so there are better times to climb Mountain Kilimanjaro. You may miss out on the stunning views and trails that are more slippery and soggy from the non-stop rains that may fall for almost the entire day in this season.

Climbing Mountain Kilimanjaro in December

Even though some mild showers are experienced during December, they do not hinder you from hiking mountain Kilimanjaro. You may have company too, and December, the festive season, attracts many people to spend the holidays taking this challenge, so expect some company.

How To Prepare For Mountain Kilimanjaro Hiking

Preparing to hike Mount Kilimanjaro requires good health, physical fitness, and the right hiking gear.

Do Physical Exercises

Having some fitness level is essential before starting the hike on Mountain Kilimanjaro. The hike gets more challenging as you ascend, but you need to get it together to catch the prize that is arriving at the Uhuru summit.

If you are physically unfit, you may delay the rest of the ascenders in your company, meaning you will prolong the time you spend on this adventure.

Get used to eating less before Mountain climbing on Kilimanjaro Mountain

Prepare yourself to have limited meals before the Kilimanjaro mountain climbing adventure. While on the way to the top of the Mountain, Kilimanjaro, sources of supplies to keep munching are limited. Meals are taken at specific points, and targets to the next stop are made so you take only a short time on the hike.

Do medical check-ups before the Kilimanjaro mountaineering adventures

You need to be in good health before hiking the Mountain Kilimanjaro. If you have altitude sickness, seek doctors’ advice before taking the Kilimanjaro hiking adventure.

Altitude sickness is more intense when you have a cold or flu, so you must watch out before starting the hike, or else you may not reach the summit.

Pack the right Mountain Climbing Gears.

You do not have to pack a lot, just what is necessary for your time on Mountain Kilimanjaro. Having so many bags is inconvenient, and the chances of forgetting them are more possible. Even though you can hire a porter to carry your hiking gear, many bags may need to be more manageable.

Ensure you have comfortable hiking boots, safari clothes, treats, a torch, a camera, a pair of binoculars, a duffel bag to pack your belongings, a sleeping bag, warmers, and much more.

How long is Mountain Climbing on Kilimanjaro Mountain

The hike on Kilimanjaro mountain may take a minimum of 7 days return trip hike to Uhuru summit. You may take more days depending on your interests and level of fitness.

You must follow the guidelines of mountaineering on Mountain Kilimanjaro

Guidelines for Climbing Mountain Kilimanjaro

Only start hiking the Mountain Kilimanjaro with an escorting ranger guide. The journey up this Mountain has many obstacles and chances of encountering wild animals, especially while still at the bottom.

No dumping garbage while hiking Mountain Kilimanjaro as this alters the surrounding nature. In case you locate indecomposable materials like plastic, tins do collect them as a way to keep the environment clean.

Use the restrooms provided at the stop-over points so that waste doesn’t flow into the streams.

Respect each other while hiking the mountain Kilimanjaro as more people join this challenge during the peak season, which is June to October and December to February. Accept to share even the tiny space at the stoves and lower your voices so as not to inconvenience those tired and resting.

Minimize damage to the trails by closely following your ranger guide to avoid making new paths. The vegetation on the slopes of Kilimanjaro must stay intact to prevent future landslides in case the soil is left bare.

During bad weather, wait for more than one high at the hut to ease congestion ahead.

Mountain Kilimanjaro Hiking Tips

Respect others you are sharing the hike up mountain Kilimanjaro to avoid getting frustrated and angry with one another because the more, the merrier.

Collect and pack indecomposable matter so that you contribute to responsible travel. Do not dump your garbage, but carry it back to the ground.

Maintain your daily pack of rainproof gear, camera, binoculars, and other items that may not weigh you down as you walk up.

Sometimes, you may get altitude sickness if you are not accustomed to heights, but you can take some pills or return to a lower height. You may experience hypothermia, dehydration, A cute Mountain sickness, and High Altitude Cerebral Edema.

Pack warmer sleeping bags, clothes, and other hiking equipment.

What to Pack For Kilimanjaro Mountain Climbing?

When packing for Mountain climbing on Kilimanjaro mountain, you do not need so much but just enough for you during your stay up the Mountain.

  • Using a camera to take photos while at Mountain Kilimanjaro is a task that is on the bucket list of many adventure seekers worldwide.
  • Hiking boots that are comfortable for you to hike for a long distance. They must be waterproof, too.
  • Sunscreen to protect your skin from getting sunburns.
  • Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the direct sunlight and buzzing insects.
  • Insect repellant to protect your skin from stinging insects you may find along the way.
  • Garden gloves to protect your fingers from touching rough surfaces along the way.

  • Warmers because the higher you go, the cooler it becomes.
  • A pair of binoculars to get better visibility of far-ranging features.
  • A pair of stockings to protect your feet from getting cold.
  • Head gears to cover yourself from getting cold while hiking to get to the top of the Mountain Kilimanjaro.

  • Rainproof gear to protect you from getting wet and cold when it rains while up the Mountain.
  • You can with hike some of the following hiking gears too.
  • Ice axes, ropes, harnesses, crampons, and others.

Is Hiking Mountain Kilimanjaro difficult?

Climbing Mountain Kilimanjaro is tiring and exhausting, but the joy you get when you reach its peak, Uhuru Peak, makes you forget what you may have gone through along the way. You need to hire some porters to help carry your bags; otherwise, you may be weighed and slowed down by this extra weight.

Hiking mountain Kilimanjaro requires patience and resilience because it is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Do some prior exercises to prepare your muscles and body for this hike to the top of the Mountain Kilimanjaro.

Since you may be in the company of other tourists who are strangers, do prepare yourself to share some facilities with them. You need to open your heart to be with strangers for the days you are on the Mountain.

Keep snacking on some energy bites because meals are taken at designated locations so that you have enough time up the Mountain and back.

If you feel sick, the ranger guides you for help in advance so that you do not fall ill along the way, which becomes more challenging.

How safe is hiking Mountain Kilimanjaro?

Mountain climbing on Kilimanjaro mountain is safe, but you must be escorted by a ranger guide to avoid getting lost along the way. Ensure you register at the station before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro so that you can be traced in case you need help.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
