Activities to do in Kidepo Valley National Park

Nestled in Uganda's remote northeastern corner, approximately 700 kilometres from Kampala and bordered by South Sudan and Kenya, Kidepo Valley National Park rewards those willing to make the journey. Gazetted in 1962 and covering 1,442 square kilometres of semi-arid savannah, mountain ranges, and sweeping river valleys, it has been named one of Africa's finest parks by CNN International and the Lonely Planet travel guide.

Popular safaris to Kidepo

4 Day Kidepo Valley Fly In Safari

9 Day Kidepo Valley and Bwindi Gorilla Safari

6 Day Kidepo Valley and Ziwa Rhinos Safari

7 Day Kidepo Valley and Murchison Falls safari

The park's dramatic landscape, characterised by sweeping savannah grasslands, rugged mountain ranges, and the remarkable Narus and Kidepo valleys, sets a breathtaking stage for a diverse range of tourism activities. From safari tours to bird-watching trips to cultural experiences and adventurous hikes, Kidepo Valley National Park promises to be the destination of choice for all types of travelers. The park will prove more than worthwhile for those who wish to experience true wilderness. Below is a detailed account of the key activities available within the park.

Top Activities in Kidepo Valley National Park

  • Game Drives

Game drives are the defining activity of any Kidepo safari. Conducted using 4×4 vehicles in the company of Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, drives reached two different zones: Narus Valley which is the main game viewing area of the park since it is supplied with water throughout the year, and the larger Kidepo Valley with its breathtaking landscapes and possibility of seeing ostriches, greater kudus, and secretary birds. Morning and afternoon sessions are held every day, and the night drives present leopards, hyenas, and jackals which hardly get seen during daytime.

  • Nature Walks

Guided nature walks offer an intimate alternative to vehicle-based game viewing. Five-kilometre walks depart from the Apoka Tourism Centre through the Narus Valley, allowing guests to read animal tracks and absorb the sounds of the African bush at close range.

A walk along the Kidepo River Valley, a striking passage of white sand flanked by Borassus palms, is especially atmospheric in the dry season, when the river bed lies fully exposed beneath an open northern sky.

  • Cultural Visits with the Karamojong People

Kidepo sits within the homeland of the Karamojong, a semi-nomadic pastoralist people whose customs and oral traditions have endured for centuries. Community visits through the Apoka Tourism Centre offer guests a respectful opportunity to engage with elders, witness traditional dances, and understand how this community has coexisted with the surrounding wilderness across generations.

The slopes of Mount Morungole are home to the IK people, one of Uganda's smallest ethnic groups, whose settlements can be visited on a guided hike, a cultural dimension no other Ugandan park can replicate.

  • Bird Watching

With over 463 recorded bird species, including 56 raptors and numerous arid-zone birds found nowhere else in Uganda, Kidepo is a world-class birdwatching destination. The park is the primary habitat of the Karamoja apalis, while notable species include the Somali ostrich, Kori bustard, Abyssinian roller, and Pygmy falcon.

The Namamukweny Valley in the northwest is especially productive, hosting the Eastern Paradise Whydah and White-crested Turaco. For ornithologists, Kidepo is not a stop on a Uganda safari, it is the destination.

  • Hiking Mount Morungole

Rising to 2,750 metres and forming the park's dramatic southern boundary, Mount Morungole is one of Uganda's finest highland hikes. The four-hour ascent, led by armed ranger escorts, rewards hikers with panoramic views across both the Kidepo and Narus valleys.

IK settlements on the mountain slopes can be visited on the descent, turning a physical challenge into a complete natural and cultural encounter. Hikers should depart early from Apoka and carry adequate water for the exposed upper sections of the trail.

Wildlife in Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo hosts 86 mammal species, of which 26 are unique to Uganda. The park holds four of the Big Five; lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo and is one of the few places in East Africa where visitors can reliably spot the cheetah. Rothschild's giraffe, plains zebra, Beisa oryx, Jackson's hartebeest, warthog, bat-eared fox, and the elusive aardwolf round out a mammal list of extraordinary range and rarity.

During the dry season months of January to March, wildlife concentrations in the Narus Valley reach their annual peak, producing predator-prey interactions that rival any wildlife spectacle on the African continent.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal periods are the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. Reduced vegetation concentrates wildlife around the Narus Valley, making game drives more productive and park tracks more navigable. The wet season, March to May and October to November, brings lush scenery and excellent birdwatching with migratory arrivals, though some tracks become temporarily inaccessible. For birdwatchers and landscape photographers, the wet season remains well worth considering.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Kidepo is deliberately limited, a fact that preserves its exclusive, uncrowded character and sets it apart from every other Ugandan national park.

Luxury

  • Apoka Safari Lodge

Inside the park overlooking the Narus Valley. Ten cottages with private verandahs, stone and canvas design, and a rock-carved pool.

At the park's edge, handcrafted by Karamojong craftsmen with panoramic savannah and mountain views from every room.

Mid-range

  • Nga'Moru Wilderness Camp

Ensuite tents among rock formations in the northern park, with evening campfires and sweeping Narus Valley views.

  • Kidepo Savannah Lodge

Raised deck tents on Kawalokol Hill near Kalokudo Gate, with views across the Narus Valley and Mount Morungole.

Budget

  • Apoka Rest Camp (UWA)

Uganda Wildlife Authority-managed bandas and camping inside the park at the most affordable rates available.

How to Get There

Kidepo is accessible from Kampala by road or air. The overland route covers approximately 700 kilometres through Gulu and Kitgum, taking 10 to 12 hours. By air, Aerolink Uganda operates scheduled and chartered flights from Entebbe International Airport to Apoka Airstrip in approximately one hour and thirty minutes, the preferred option for most visitors and those on multi-park itineraries. A 4×4 vehicle is essential for navigating the park's tracks, particularly after rainfall.

Travel Tips

Before You Go

Book your game drives at the Apoka Tourism Centre sufficiently early, as demand for guides tends to be high during peak season. Take along adequate money, as there are no ATMs in or around the park. Pack lightweight clothing in neutral colours, a hat with a large brim sunscreen insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera with a telephoto lens of at least 300mm. At least three to four days should be planned, as the location of animals changes every day and several drives will be required to see the park in its entirety. Consider combining Kidepo with Murchison Falls National Park for a complete northern Uganda circuit.

Conclusion: An Unmissable Uganda Safari Experience

Kidepo Valley National Park is the Uganda safari that experienced wildlife travellers return to repeatedly and that first-time visitors consistently describe as the most affecting encounter of their lives. It does not carry the name recognition of Bwindi's mountain gorillas or the thunder of Murchison Falls. It does not need to. The lions moving through the Narus Valley at first light, the cheetahs crossing the open plains, the Karamojong elder recounting generations of life alongside this wilderness, the profound quiet of the northern savannah, these are the things that make Kidepo one of the finest safari experiences available anywhere in Africa.

For guided Kidepo Valley National Park safari packages and northern Uganda safari planning, consult a licensed Uganda tour operator with specialist knowledge of the Karamoja sub-region.

The trip of a lifetime. This was the adventure of a lifetime. Being able to be so close to these majestic animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. Our trip was only two days in duration and in hindsight I would have loved to have done a two day trip. Our trek into the forest was a relatively short one and with only eight people in the group was just the perfect number. Our driver/ guide Jason was the perfect host being so knowledgeable about the gorillas and the local communities surrounding the forest. Our consultant Denis whom we communicated with from the very start of of this experience was nothing short of excellent!! The communication at all times was professional, informative and quick. At times during our hour spent with the gorilla family I had to pinch myself to remind me that this was actually for real and not some excellent wildlife documentary. Words and pictures don’t really convey the remarkable experience that this was. If you are reading this then I would encourage you to have this experience for yourself. Encounter Africa Safaris we’re 5 star from begin to end.

Solo Female Traveler in Uganda - Exceptional experience while feeling safe Being a solo female traveler, I felt incredibly cared for in both the planning and the actual vacation. Denis and the Encounter Africa Safari Team helped me decide on how to book my trip within my budget and with hotels that don't penalize you for staying alone. Beyond that, they provided last-minute changes (about a week before) to what I wanted to see. When my driver arrived, it was a VERY early transfer from a different tour group in the high Bwindi Mountains. Huge shout out to Patrick (my driver), he was very knowledgeable, and has such PASSION for what he does. Not as someone who just bogs you down with all the information in his head (which he was able to answer all my many, many, many many questions) but truly wants to know what would make your vacation the BEST one, what you care about seeing, and provides a view of Uganda through a local's eyes and why it is beautiful to them. He helped me see beyond just the incredible experiences of the Safaris, Nile, Kazinga Channel, and White Water Rafting - but also the people, locations that are off the beaten path, and what truly makes Uganda special and unique in so many ways. I hope to return soon! Thank you for making this investment in memories worth every penny, and for helping me feel safe and respected by both the company staff and every person in the hotels and those we met along the way.

Professional, Responsive, and Reliable – Excellent Experience with Encounter Africa Safaris We had a fantastic experience with Encounter Africa Safaris in Uganda. From the very beginning, their communication was fast, clear, and professional. Monica, in particular, was incredibly responsive and helpful — she answered every question promptly and with genuine care, which gave us great peace of mind while planning our trip.We chose the two-day, one-night itinerary starting and ending in Kigali, with a border crossing into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off at Kigali Airport. Our driver, Edgar, was outstanding — calm, friendly, and extremely skilled behind the wheel. Navigating the rough, winding gravel roads to Bwindi is no small task, but Edgar handled it with ease and confidence. We always felt safe and well taken care of, even in the most remote areas. The logistics were smooth, the planning thoughtful, and the overall experience was exactly what we hoped for — efficient, well-organized, and stress-free.If you're considering a safari or gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda, I can highly recommend Encounter Africa Safaris for their professionalism, personal touch, and great team.

Amazing experience I did the 3 day gorilla experience from Kigali and the whole trip was fantastic. From the initial planning with Denis who answered ALL my questions and queries. I was a little nervous about booking directly and online however the company was really professional. I was picked up in Kigali by Godwin and then taken to the Genocide museum then we had a beautiful dive through the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside. I stayed at the Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge where the staff were really friendly and with beautiful views of the forest from my bungalow. The gorilla trekking was such a great experience, we got to spent an hour with a family of about 15, I still cannot believe how close we were. On the trip back to Rwanda I had time to drop in at Bunyonyi Lake and did a 2 hour boat trip before being dropped back at Kigali Airport. I enjoyed the whole trip, Godwin took great care of me. I will return again in the future and definitely recommend. Thank you to the Encounter Africa team.

We recently completed a memorable trip organized by Encounter Africa, traveling from Kigali, Rwanda to Entebbe, Uganda, and overall, the experience was overall excellent. Right from the start, everything was well-organized, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned. The lodges selected for our stay were generally of a high standard, offering comfort, great service, and beautiful surroundings. There was one exception during the trip where a lodge didn’t meet expectations, but we were very impressed with how quickly and professionally Encounter Africa responded. They changed the accommodation immediately without fuss, showing a strong commitment to guest satisfaction. A major highlight of the trip was our guide, Richard (Instagram: @richardmrtravels). Richard was nothing short of fantasti....knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help. Whether we had questions about the places we visited, needed assistance with logistics, or just wanted to learn more about the region, Richard was our go-to person. He’s highly recommended if you want a top-notch guide who truly cares about your experience. The gorilla and chimpanzee tracking excursions were absolutely unforgettable—well coordinated, with expert local trackers, and truly one-of-a-kind wildlife encounters. The only downside of the trip was the standard of transport provided. The vehicle’s air conditioning was not functioning properly, which made some of the longer drives uncomfortable, especially during the hotter parts of the day

Patrick was our tour guide and he was nothing short of amazing. He helped to make my wife and my honeymoon unforgettable. He made us feel totally comfortable and and was a pleasure to get to talk with and learn more about Uganda. Without hesitation I recommend his service. Uganda will hold a special place in our heart, in my ways because of Patrick’s level of service and caring nature. The chimp trekking and gorilla hiking were a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t hesitate to use this company and make sure to ask for Patrick!
