From guided forest walks to cultural visits with local communities, there are many great and meaningful activities to enjoy in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Below are some of the activities you can do in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda;
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is renowned for its mountain gorilla population. Gorilla trekking is the biggest activity for most visitors in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Gorilla trekking starts at 8:00 am with a briefing at the park headquarters by a ranger guide and allocation of gorilla families to trek. Each gorilla family is allowed a maximum of 8 visitors on a particular day and the forest has more than 12 families but in different locations. Gorilla trekking sectors are; Rushaga, Nkuringo, Buhoma and Ruhija.
After a short briefing, you head into the forest with your ranger guide ahead of you to clear the trail. The trek lasts between 2 to 8 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas but usually, the park forest rangers enter the forest earlier and try to track the gorillas from the point where they were seen the previous day. Upon finding the gorillas, you will be allowed up to a maximum of 1 hour to see and photograph the gorillas as they play, feed, and go about their day. When your 1 hour observation of gorillas is done, you get to enjoy your lunch pack and then head out of the forest to the starting point, where you will receive your gorilla trekking certificate as confirmation of your successful trekking experience in Bwindi. It is very important to book your gorilla permits in advance due to limited availability, and you can book your trekking permits at the Uganda Wildlife Authority office or through a local tour operator like Encounter Africa Safaris. A gorilla trekking permit is $800 for foreign non-residents.
Besides gorilla trekking which is an adventure of its own, gorilla habituation is an even more exciting activity. Gorilla habituation allows visitors to spend more time (4 hours) with the mountain gorillas than the typical 1 hour allowed for trekking. You spend time with a group pf researchers as they prepare the wild gorillas for human interactions, thus spending more time observing and understanding their lifestyle. This experience is done in the Southern part of the park known as the Rushaga sector. Only 4 visitors are allowed per day therefore 4 gorilla habituation permits are available per day which makes it very crucial to always book your permits in advance.
For birders, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a place to visit. With more than 350 recorded bird species, it’s a true haven for birdwatchers. Among these are 23 Albertine Rift endemics, which make up about 90% of the region’s endemic species, including special sightings like the Short-tailed Warbler and the Blue-headed Sunbird. The forest is also home to seven species listed on the IUCN Red Data List.
Birding in Bwindi takes place along four main trails: the main trail, the Buhoma Waterfall Trail, the bamboo zone, and the Mubwindi Swamp Trail in Ruhija each offers its own unique birding experience.
If you are interested in local culture, the Batwa cultural experience is a great adventure. The Batwa, one of the region's indigenous communities, lived in the forest for generations as hunters before it was declared a National Park. Today, visitors join guided walks led by the Batwa people themselves, offering insight on their traditional lifestyle, survival skills, and the connection they have to the forest. The experience includes traditional songs and dances, demonstrations of hunting methods, making of fire, and storytelling that brings their heritage to life.
