3 Days 2 Nights Uganda Gorilla Trekking Through Kigali

This 3-day Uganda gorilla trekking tour from Kigali involves starting the safari from Kigali, Rwanda to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, a day of gorilla trekking, and a return journey to Kigali. You will have an opportunity to spend one hour with mountain gorillas, you will have several stops such as at The Genocide memorial in Kigali. The drive from Kigali to Bwindi is about 4-5 hours.

Detailed itinerary

• Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You will be picked up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport by a driver/guide and start the journey to Bwindi via a stop at the Genocide Memorial and proceed to Bwindi via the Katuna Border. This Journey takes approximately 4-5 hours. You will have lunch en route in Kabale

• Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  • Start the day with an early breakfast at the lodge and depart to the park headquarters for a briefing at 7:30 AM.

• • You will be assigned to a group to trek into the forest to find the gorillas depending on your physical ability and how many hours you prefer to spend in the forest.

• • Trekking can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours depending on the gorillas' location. Once you find them you, will spend one hour with the mountain gorillas observing and photographing them.

• • After the trek, you will return to the park headquarters where you will be awarded a certificate of completion.

• Day 3: Optional Batwa cultural experience and return to Kigali

• • After breakfast, you can opt to participate in a cultural experience.

• • A common activity is the Batwa Trail experience, where you learn about the indigenous Batwa community.

• • After the cultural visit, you will begin your transfer back to Kigali.

• • You will be dropped off at your hotel or the airport for your departure depending on your next program.

What to consider for your 3 Days 2 Nights Gorilla trekking safari through Kigali

• Cost: The price for the tour varies depending on the level of accommodation. This package starts around $490 per person for the road tour, not including gorilla permits.
• Permit booking: Gorilla permits should be booked well in advance, especially during peak season, as only a limited number of permits are issued per day. We advise you to book your gorilla permits at least 6 months to a year in advance.

• Gorilla permits: Gorilla trekking permits cost $800 per person for Foreign Non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, $500 for Rest Of Africa (ROA) and 300,000 Uganda shillings for East Africans. This permit includes park entrance and ranger guides while in the forest.

• Fitness: Gorilla trekking is a strenuous activity as it involves hiking through potentially steep, muddy, thick forest terrain. Therefore a certain level of fitness is required. There is an option of hiring a sedan chair at $300 for the elderly or people with disabilties.

• Other: A picnic lunch is usually provided by the lodge on the day of the trek. You can carry more snacks of your preference like energy bars among others..
• What to Pack: Waterproof hiking boots, gutters, a rain jacket, neutral colored long-sleeved shirts and trousers, sunscreen to protect you against the sun, insect repellent to guard against insect bites, reusable water bottle, gloves, and a non-flash camera.
• Documents: Make sure to carry your passport, yellow fever card, and any other vaccination certificates.
• Dry vs wet season: Trekking during the dry season offers easier conditions and clearer visibility, but permits sell out quickly. During the wet season, trails are more challenging, but permits are easier to acquire, and accommodation prices can be lower.

Best time to Visit

• Dry seasons (peak season): Dry seasons of June to August and December to February are the best times to go for gorilla trekking experience in Uganda, as the trails are dry and less slippery. This is also the most sought after period, so you must book your gorilla permit way in advance.
• Wet seasons (off-peak): Wet seasons of March to May and September to November see higher downpour, making trails a bit challenging. However, this period usually has fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices.
